I'm new to pool chemicals. During this week of expected non-stop rain, when should I check / add stuff?

Should I also run the filter most of the day?

If your chemicals are good going into the rain, then you should be fine.

The issues you should be aware of:

1. If your chlorine levels are low depending on your CYA levels, then it can dilute the chlorine enough that you get green pool. This can definitely happen if using pucks. I run liquid chlorine, so it's never a problem for me, unless I screw up my chlorine feed

2. Other chemical values can also go down due to rain including CYA, TA, CH, CL. Those aren't a big immediate impact. Just good to know and track over time

3. Rain can cause a bunch of junk to get in the pool and end up in skimmers. Check those to make sure they aren't crazy full

I don't worry about mine in rain events. When it is over, I'll drop a couple of bags of shock in and then check the levels. It is nothing to stress out about.

How do you keep your CYA in check?

During a rain event or in general?

In general

I use chlorine pucks, so I don't have low CYA levels. I try to only keep a couple of pucks in my chlorinator at at time to help limit high CYA. If I go out of town, obviously that changes and I have to fill it up. My CYA levels do get too high but it isn't often. Never more than 1x a year. When that happens, I don't waste money trying to lower them with chemicals. I'll just drop a sump pump in and pump out some water and refill. I plan to start using the troublefreepool method to avoid this, but I have been lazy in switching over because the pucks are so easy otherwise.

I'd throw some shock in

Brush, balance and shock after rain event. Simple.

I do the tfp method manually. Especially this time of year, when we really aren't swimming yet, I will tend to dump a little extra chlorine in to keep the levels up against dilution and crap that might fall in. Then will recheck everything when it clears up.

Checked my levels today as compared to last Sunday.

CL dropped by 1.5 ppm. I upped my liquid CL feed rate
PH stayed flat at 7.6 with no acid addition. It usually goes up during the week.
TA dropped by 10. Added baking soda to get it back in line
