Ags,

After 22 years, making the move to College Station and we are going to be replacing washer/Dryer and refrigerator. Have Kitchen Aid Fridge now, it's been OK, I've had to replace fill valve, had a hammering issue with filling etc. but all in all not a bad unit. Washer & Dryer is what I have no idea about. We have GE units that are over 20 years old. What are the must haves these days? Are Samsungs good? What to avoid?

Thanks in advance to any and all answers.

So I have a GE fridge and dishwasher and LG washer and dryer, the only appliances I've bought myself in the last decade. The W&D are around 9 years old, and I have not had one issue. The GE fridge is 5 years old and no issues wither. The GE dishwasher on the other hand is around 4 years old and just died on me. Well, it quite turning on. I called a guy I've used previously and said that all GE dishwasher are having issues with the control board failing after a few years. Said replacement boards are in short supply and hard to come by right now and it would run $300 - $350 to replace. And it would be the same board that would fail again in a few years. Said I was better off just buying a new one (different brand). He said to avoid GE, Frigidaire, and LG (and one other I can't remember). He said Maytag and Whirlpool and another one (once again I can't remember) seem to have less issues. But, he flat out said you're not going to get one that lasts for 15-20 years any more, none of them seem to last that long.

Do with that as you will...

It's good to hear the ones to avoid, didn't know GE would be on that list. I know LG was one to stay away from and I've not heard good things about Samsung either.

Well, like I said, my GE fridge has been fine, the dishwasher not so much. I guess you'd like to think that a brand would be consistent across the board, but who knows. And the repair guy I talked to was just speaking in regards to dishwashers. Maybe their dishwashers are problematic but other appliances not so much. Or maybe they've just gone down hill. I don't know. That's just been my experience, though. Just never quite know what you are going to get.

Any of the brands that you can get at the big box stores are going to be hit and miss. Some here will have great luck and others with the same model will have a horror story.

Simple answer is they're all crap, good luck hitting the lottery and getting a good one out of the bunch.

I'm not sure if the high end brands are any better, but I haven't really checked.

On a side note, I'm scared as hell of moving my beer fridge out in my garage, It's 27 years old and I'm worried that the compressor won't come back on after the move. All my stickers of cool beer joints and beers will have to start all over.

Speed queen for the washer dryer. TC5 washer and DC5 dryer are the good old school style machines

Agreed, GE/Hotpoint had to be shot with as 357mag to end their lives. Some local dealers carry these & Navasota Speed Queen.

Well, there are so many lemons out there, the dice roll tells who loves what, then
there's many coming out of a rental that haven't learned how to take care of appliances yet - to them, I say ask what to buy from the guy you'll be calling to fix them. Each town gets a different warranty treatment from the manufacturers.

Our latest lucky deals that make us smile:
  • REF/ice: 2013 Samsung RSG257AARS with only one ice maker EZ DIY replacement, a new historic record for long life ice
  • DRYER: 2009 Whirlpool Cabrio, 2023 LG DLE7400WE, love the door swings 3 ways!
  • WASHER: 2017 LG WT7500CW Tip: most will need to add Water Hammer arrestors to the lines these days since the vales shut off so fast (even Amazon sells them)
  • Kitchen-Aid over Bosch for all the rest due to best internal layout designs and equals the German engineering guts now

Hahahahahaha but I feel your day-mare!

Almost serious here ....
Worse care scenario:
Lay dead GE Ref on its back
Buy two table top ice makers running 110v inside it
Fill it with beer
Might need a counter weight to open or keep open the door now
Get a Dixie Chicken sticker for it because this is how the DC began! Shaved ice bins = ice cold Northgate beers!
I was there .......

Savings? $1400

If you need some help with the beers - we wouldn't mind helping!

Also - Check costco for Memorial Day Sales on appliances. We bought a new washer and dryer from them, got a good deal and was delivered and installed.

We have Speed Queen for our washer and dryer. Got them at Turner's in Navasota. Went with Thermador for all the kitchen appliances. You'll be on a waitlist for both.

Regarding washers and dryers.

We hve bought the basic model GE's. We bought them with our first home back in 2005. Both units made 4 moves and lasted until 2021. Never an issue or repair needed until 2021. Dryer went out first and I tried to fix, but after 2-3 attempts, wasn't worth anymore time or wife stress due to backed up laundry, so I replaced it. Same basic model.

Washer went out next, pump died and it wasn't draining. New pump was about $100, and again time for me to fix it.
Took it to scrap yard, got $15 for it and bought the basic model again.

My motto is the more bells and whistles, the more chance it will break and need repair that I can't fix.

We need it to wash and dry, not worried about efficiency as we have 5 kids, so bill it up and move them thru.

We got a very gently used Samsung high efficiency washer and dryer set. We kept our old washer and dryer and will be moving back to them soon. The Samsung set is just incredibly finicky. Can't leave the washer closed or it'll smell. Washer's spin cycle didn't always get the clothes wrung out. Dryer can't operate on any sensor cycle because everything comes out damp. I've tried replacing parts and doing other troubleshooting things, but they just flat out suck.

Thanks for all the feedback from everyone. Seems like it's going to be a crap shoot no matter what way I go so I'll choose an American made unit if at all possible.

Speed Queen is made in Wisconsin. I'd say check out their website, and you'll see what makes them different.

Thermador makes some of their appliances in America. I think their refrigerators and dishwashers are made in Europe.

I think Wolf and Sub-Zero make all their appliances in Wisconsin as well.

Good luck in picking something out.

Speed queen for washer and dryer. I have a Termador dish washer and it is great. My fridge is a GE profile that has been good for the 3 yrs I've owned it.

My experience with appliances here at home...

Washer and Dryer - Both Kenmore, bought 19 years ago and moved across the country 3x. Still work like new
Fridge - LG, bought it in 2010 and moved it from San Antonio to Charleston. Works just fine, even the icemaker.
Microwave drawer - Sharp, 2014. They're all made by Sharp and differences are cosmetic.
Gas cooktop - Blue Star, 2014. This thing will outlast me. It only needs power for the sparker.
All other kitchen appliances- Miele, bought in 2014 when I redid the kitchen. Work and look like new still

If I had to do it again I'd do the same for the kitchen except Subzero instead of LG for the fridge. W/D, would go with Speed Queen because they're probably the last built to last, mechanical ones.

Frigidaire for fridge

Avoid samsung in general and front loaders will exhibit mold/mildew issues unless you always leave the washer door open.

If you're looking for a front load washer & dryer, I would recommend GE. One of the biggest issues with front load washers is the seal getting mold/mildew unless you leave the door open after every wash. GE solved the issue with a vent system on the washer. They hold the patent so I don't think others have this same technology yet. We bought ours a year ago and it's been a huge upgrade from our old top load. Other benefits of front load are less water usage and higher RPMs so clothes come out less wet and spend less time in the dryer.

Literally every person here will have different opinions based on anecdotes.

Buy what you like and spend an amount you're comfortable with knowing you'll likely be replacing within 5-10 years.

This does change slightly when you go to luxury brands….

all of ours are less than 4 years old so not a lot of help on reliability.

Really like the Bosch dishwasher, really quiet.
No issues with the Kitchen Aid Oven/Micro combo
Thermador 5 burner gas stovetop (love it)
Electrolux fridge and freezer, separate units but have a kit that makes them look like one huge unit. The only issue is the fridge where I have a very small condensation line issue where it drips occasionally and puddles up on the tile. I tried fixing it without pulling it all out and think I have it solved for now, but it is a bit worrisome.
Maytag top loader washer is very good, that is 6 years old.
KitchenAid under counter icemaker - no issues with this, but to me it is overly noisy with the constant ice production. Without kids or lots of guests, just too much hassle for not enough ice usage. It wasn't my pick so I keep my opinion to myself.

Best of the bunch, about an 18 year old Maytag electric dryer that was my wife's grandmothers. Replaced one bearing and it's still going strong. No circuit boards to go out and fewer moving parts.

Speed Queen is for sure the correct answer for washer / dryer. Built like tanks like the old days. Anything you get at a big box store will be meh.

for refrigerator - look at a scratch and dent place. We got a brand new Kitchen Aid refrigerator with a quarter sized dent on it - on the side that's against the wall. Could never tell! Home Depot had it for 4k - and I paid 1500. I was even able to get the guy to knock a couple hundred bucks off if I left a couple twenties for the "packing crew."

I will say, the Kitchen Aid - while more expensive then the Whirlpools that own it, is really just a fancy looking whirlpool. I've determined it doesn't matter how much you spend, they're still loud. Don't make appliances like they used to

This is a fun saying but not really the truth….

Basic truth is all the brands you listed have issues. So be prepared to replace in 5-10 years.

But going deeper….

I've talked to various repairmen with a recent washer issue and everyone said lg front loaders are the best washers out there (minus going speedqueen), it's what they had personally. LG fridges, yes avoid. They have lots of issues with compressors, multiple class action lawsuits. And their new compressor that is supposed to be the fix is even worse.

Kitchen aid has issues with where their controls are and getting moisture in them. Believe they're right below the water/ice dispenser. Or was when I shopped about 6 years ago.

My parents have had to replace like 3 control boards on their ge fridge. All under warranty but were so sick of the claim process they just bought a different fridge the 4th time.

Whirlpool has defrosting issues. Class action lawsuit on it where it freezes up because the design of the auto defrost.

Samsung is notorious for issues with ice machines. But that's what we went with for our fridge. Price was right, and I'd rather replace a $150 ice machine than a $1000 compressor….

Get 'em while they last

Quote:

(Bloomberg) -- The Biden administration is advancing stricter efficiency requirements for household dishwashers that promise to pare water and greenhouse gas emissions as well as utility bills, years after former President Donald Trump exempted speed-cleaning models.

Under the Energy Department's proposed standard, conventional household dishwashers made in or imported into the US as soon as 2027 would have to use 27% less power and 34% less water no more than 3.3 gallons during their normal, default cycles. Compact models would see a 22% and 11% reduction in power and water use, respectively. The requirements would not apply to other dishwasher cycles, including those with faster run times.

The dishwasher measure, advanced alongside requirements for electric motors and beverage vending machines, comes as the performance of gas stoves, washing machines and other household appliances draws scrutiny. And while the proposed dishwasher requirements promise to save consumers money over their lifetimes roughly $168 million per year according to the Energy Department's estimate there could be higher initial costs, as manufacturers design new models to comply.

First they came for the heating element that made sure your dishes were actually dry and mildew didn't grow inside the dishwasher. Then they made your dishwasher unable to clean anything.

I bought LG appliances in 2010 for the house in SA I lived in at the time and that was the first thing I noticed, dishes weren't dry when the cycle was done. And if I closed the door before the inside dried out it would get all kinds of funky by the time I opened it again.

The Miele I have here in Charleston automatically opens the door a couple of inches at the end of the cycle so stuff can air out. No leftover moisture and no funk.

People always talk about front load washer smell. I have had front loaders for years and I have never had that issue. I check my seal and do not have any mold/ mildew issue either. I don't leave the door open between loads. I do add white vinegar to every load because I have Australian Shepherds ( lots of hair). The vinegar keeps the hair from sticking to the clothes.
