Wondering if anyone has window tinting on their home windows. Situation is west facing bedroom, previously had big trees helping to block the room but we lost those over the years due to the drought and freezes etc. Last summer we baked and not doing that again.

These are older double pane windows with curtains that we leave closed 99% of the time. I'm specifically looking at tint because we'd do bedroom and also bathroom that has big window with half moon shape at the top (hard to curtain or blind).

Can anyone speak to the heat reduction effectiveness of tint? I'm not currently looking at solar shades but may later. Question now is on tint alone. Got quote for V-Kool 40 and V-Kool 55 tint.

I can speak only for the permanent, comes-with-glazing option in Daylight blue, which the Owner claimed more comfort but no energy data. The tint seemed almost invisible.

As for superior solutions to only tinting
  • Shade the exterior of that West wall! 1) erect a lattic wall for fast growing vines (or grow them on the house wall), 2) create a garden bed for fast growing tall shrubs and Chinese Pistache trees + one distant Live Oak to finally take over in 7+ years
  • Pergolas erect quickly, giving shade until vines finally cover them, plenty of 800 numbers will come to serve
  • if you can't add insulation to that hot wall, add it to the attic, then hang heavy, insulative wall hanging inside, be they art/craft blankets or upholstery
  • Solar screens: a) made to order @ Enercon, b) rolls from Home Depot that staple up

Ten words or less ... a goal unattainable

Ceramic works.

I put it on a small window in our pantry that doesn't have an hvac vent.

During the summer it improved at least 10 degrees.
