We are looking at putting up a new fence, it's a pretty big project and the website of the company we got a quote from mentions they are local, texan company, things like that however the Owner only gives his first name and the first letter of his last name on his business card and quote.

He also showed up with Florida plates on his vehicle and had a pretty competitive price. We are Interested in using him, but just want to verify they are not a fly by night company

There must be a local address somewhere on the documents, or website. If it's that hard to determine a plausible reason for what cause you concern, then I agree with the above.

There are plenty of companies in which everything you said is completely legitimate. However, all documents, websites, cards, numbers should all match with said local address and it would be super duper easy to determine that it's kosher. The fact that you can't figure that out is bad bull. The fact the rep is using first name last initial is unprofessional at best, shady at worst, unless he is an aspiring local rapper which would also be unusual.

Does his business card have little perforations around the edge like he printed it himself? That's not always bad but when coupled with other red flags it doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy.

My P.I. friend owes me a favor but this will not include DEEP dives into backgrounds.
Google my email and send me all the details to see what I can get my Monday.

Otherwise anyone can contact theif local BBB and request they be listed, if no information on file there yet.
This is a snail's pace, however.

Ask for referrals, Google anything they gave you, then give only the Owner a phone call ... now you have more "facts" to Google. Infotracer, et al. values have gone South (not worth it).

Google competitors and find 5-star ones to call, then ask them about this mysterious biz ... take anything negative with a grain of salt but can be questions to ask the Owner.
e.g.
Competitors have been quoted as "not in biz anymore", 'moved out of town", "only does big projects", "what happens if he dies mid-project", "charges more than us" and many other falsehoods in order to compete. When asked, we easily de-fuse these bombs.

If it's a corporation, LLC or a limited partnership they should be listed at this website

https://mycpa.cpa.state.tx.us/coa/

If they are self employed or a simple Fred- Ralph-and George general partnership they will not

As mentioned above the BBB is probably a good resource too - not to prove a viable business but to help identify a shyster

You can see how long his website has been around by looking it up on the Wayback Machine.
