Low grinding sound coming from 2 different ceiling fans. Fans are about 2 years old and both are hampton bay. I am thinking it is the bearings on one because the noise continues when I shut the motor off until the blades stop. The other, the noise stops when I shut the motor off. This one is high up in the living room on a long drop rod, so hopefully I don't have to replace it. The one I think is the bearing is in a bedroom. Both run about half the day on low or medium.

Anything I can do to stop the noise, other than just replacing them with more expensive fans?

Replace the bearing, replace the fan, or ignore the noise. Those are your options.

Bearing are about to go. As stated, replace fan or bearing or live with it until the fan dies.

You might try spraying some WD40 into the bearing area on the ceiling fan in the bedroom (I'm not sure if you can safely reach the one in the living room with it being so high). I've had similar issues and did this and the noise went away and the fan is still going after 18 years of usage.

I'm not saying this will solve your issue but if you are either going to have to live with the noise and/or replace the ceiling fans, it might be worth a try.

If you're going to do that, spray some remoil. WD-40 is more solvent than lubricant. Good luck getting it anywhere near where you need it.

Well at the time I had a can of WD40 sitting around the house. I didn't have any remoil. I sprayed the ceiling fan once with WD40 and it lubricated it enough where the noise went away and I've never heard it again for about 15 years now (the ceiling fan was around three years old when I initially sprayed it).

Are the fans controlled by a speed switch on the wall? Those can start going out and cause these types of noises when the power they provide becomes unstable to the fan.

I bought the aftermarket remote controller that goes into the single gang switch box.

After considerable youtubing, I am thinking the upstairs one might be the vanity motor cover touching something turning. Tried adjusting by hand and couldn't fix it. Probably going to take the whole fan down next week and reinstall it.
