As I get older, it gets harder and harder climbing the attic stairs with stuff to store in the attic or to remove from the attic. I'm thinking of putting either a small block and tackle or an electric winch in the attic tied to a lifting net. One of the problems with that idea is that the filled net will bump up or down the attic ladder.

Any other better ideas?

You'd either have to change the stairs to the pull down variety or cut a whole new access point to put in a proper lift

Had a friend that had everything in identical storage boxes. He installed rails on the sides of his attic ladder so that he could slide the boxes up and down more easily. If you don't want an attic lift, this may be your next best option. Would be relatively easy to make a sled to fit the rails and winch everything up too for an in-between solution. Sorry, don't have pics of it.

Also note that he had to remove the center section to get the ladder to fold up. It was a cheap solution and good to use a few times a year, but not the best idea for regular use.

Agree with all above but since it appears to be a problem, THEN guessing that another solution might be in your future .....

All - every one we have designed had no legs, i.e. never got built, installed, etc. in 40+ years.
The only built solutions have been garage Spartan stairs to attic door above, shed (as mentioned) or in 2-story cases, a hallway door leading into floored attic.

Exception: just remembered an exterior stairs leading to an attic gable window turned into a door
This reminds me of hay barns storing in "attic" had a gable doorway + overhead beam to serve a hoist.

Are you in the middle of nowhere? If not, find a neighborhood kid and give him 10 bucks. I just replaced my attic stairs a year ago and schlepping Christmas stuff and occasional things up and down but still have some good years left. The base of the Christmas tree is the worst of it.

Didn't see OB first. They're answers are pretty good.

My old man had a handyman come out and together they rigged up a lift using a truck winch and some garage rails for stability. It works really well and he rides it up and down with boxes to store up there.

That's pretty cool. I hadn't even thought about the possibility of the lift actually lifting a person. If you get a chance to snap some pictures of it and post them, that would be really interesting.
