I moved into a new build last fall and have about 13,000 sqft of bermuda sod that was installed in early November. I've always followed Randy Lemmon's schedule on previous lawns and have continued to this year, but struggling with whether or not to put down a pre-emergent this spring. There are a good amount of weeds popping up that I'm trying to control by spot spraying and pulling, but wondering if I can get away with pre emergent to prevent this problem in the summer months.

I would not use pre-emergent on a brand new lawn. I would wait until the lawn has at least one full growing season on it and then attack it. There more knowledgeable people on here than me though. But I'd be afraid that it would hinder root development.

Agreed, I would not do pre-emergent this season. I would want a full growing season to strengthen the roots before I put a soil barrier down. Use a good fertilizer with some potash and iron in it this season to help the process, and I would have no issues controlling weeds with any selective herbicide as they pop up.

If it's that new, will you have a lot of weeds to go after? I'd get a bucket to sit on, a bucket to put the weeds on and over several weekends keep pulling up roots and all and hit is next winter.

You aren't going to hurt bermuda with a preemergent. I have always laid down preemergent on all of the sod I've laid, sometimes even under it.

100% agree, put it down or fight weeds. Bermuda is really hard to F up.

You've used specticle on and right before new sod? Im about to do a sprigging job and was going to use a tiller to break the barrier since specticle label says no sod for 6 months after application?

The only way you are going to kill Bermuda is to remove sunlight from it. I have seen that **** survive just about anything that is not labeled for use on it.

Yes. It may take a little longer to tack down good roots but it will. On top is best but your roots will break that layer on their on after a while.

What rate was used and when was the application made?

1/4 rate application (3.6oz/acre) since I do split apps. Applied on 3/8. Half rate prodiamine was a month before that. I plan on using a tiller to turn the sod into sprigs and into the soil for better contact, but assumed specticle would really stunt sod/sprigs with how much of a root pruner it is.

Its going to be noticeably slower to fill in but with enough fert and water, you can push through it just fine and you will be better off in regards to new weeds

Awesome thanks. I thought heavy water/Fert might do the trick, but was not sure.
