Different Tile in Adjoining Room

Just wanted to get some opinions. I had a tile damage issue in a laundry room. This room is connected to a much larger room used as an office. It is all 13"x13" tile and the tile store said that is out of style and that I will have trouble matching it.

They suggested I tile the laundry room in a complimenting beige and use a transition type of tile to tie the two together. I am really not sure about having that sort of a contrast. They also said the wood floor look tiles (rectangular tiles) are the style now and that I could just do the room in that and not use a transition piece and it would just look like I upgraded. I really don't want to replace both rooms. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

No issue with different tile in different rooms just like you wouldn't have an issue with carpet in a bedroom and wood in a hallway. The biggest issue is finding complementary flooring and a good transition piece.

Transitions can be as boring as one of the tiles placed at a different angle, solid pieces of marble/stone, or completely different tiles. If you want to keep it simple and are planning to use a new tile similar to your old, find a complementary stone threshold and have it fabricated to match your door/opening width.

We've done this a few times over our last couple houses. We opted to go with "wood look" tiles in the laundry and some guest baths both times. We purposely did not want to try and match what was existing in the common area outside the door. We felt it would look more awkward if you can tell we tried to match vs just going for something that is a good compliment.

Thanks for the replies. I am leaning towards just going with the rectangular/wood tile look with a color that doesn't stand out too much.
