We've been happy with our Shark Lift Away for several years now. They still sell essentially the same model and it gets good ratings.

If you really want clean, I think the Miele canisters are still the top of the line, but those are $7-$900 new.

And if you have kids, I don't think there's any way around having a professional out to shampoo every year (or twice a year if you have boys).

It seems to fall to me this duty, in that I inherited some allergies so more in need to rid house of allergens the blessed carpet collected, held until full, with my thanks. (Same with litter box, in the day.)

So have been there done ALL that and even tested one against another on mostly Karastan, some sheet vinyl, some tile, some Berber.

Results in order:
1. RICCAR upright, the more spent, the better the machine & ease of use SewVacCity!
2. Miele Tango - found a Maroon deal on eBay, almost a Riccar equal, $99 brush only lasts 3 years
3. Hoover top-o-line bagged

The rest are many & omitted to save all the rants that might be released on each & every one that wasted time/money/frustration.

The Miele automatically adjusts height when you run it from one floor surface to another + Looooong cord, Powerful suction (ala Riccar) and thus Shames all bagless-less-than-$200 vacs ... IMHO
Short-hand answers here ... long-hand help here ....

I know you have mostly carpet floors... When we first got married we got the riccar moonlight for our house which has mostly hardwoods and it was amazing for 10+yrs. It was in need of some maintenance and Evans vacuum (FW) sold me on the miele complete c3 home care. Amazing vacuum. Very well built.

We have a variation of the shark. Best combination of hepa filtration and bagless at a decent price point.

We bit the bullet a few (5,6, or so) years ago and bought a Miele Dynamic.

Works great. No issues.

Miele makes the best. I have many other vacuum cleaners over 40+ years, even Consumer Reports recommended which ended up being trash, before I discovered Miele. They are expensive but worth it.

So I'm tempted by the Miele. However, I went through this about 9 years ago. Went back and forth of which brand and how much to spend. Ended up with an Eureka with a bag for about $150 or so. It's still going strong. The hose attachment has just now gotten a crack so I'm thinking about a new unit. From a cost/year plus functionality it's really hard to justify an expensive vacuum.

However, I think a bagged vacuum is mandatory.

We have 2 Miele canisters. They are tanks. The first one is 16 years old and works perfectly. I think it was about $399 at the time but money well spent. The 2nd we found on clearance for like $120 at Bed Bath and Beyond a few years back. Bought that one because it was a good deal.

I have a Sebo canister and LOVE it!! We have hardwood and rugs, so just have a spinning brush thing, but they have wonderful upgrades with self propelled carpet attachments.

After doing A LOT of research and viewing YouTube review videos I bought a Shark Vertex DuoClean PowerFin Upright Vacuum Model: AZ2000W.

I like it, but don't love it. I don't feel like the brush roll cleans as well as my old Eureka Boss, but better than the Shark Navigator that this one replaced. I do love the ability to take the canister off so I can vacuum under furniture etc.

It also don't wrap hair around the brush so that's a big bonus for me.

I demoed the shark and miele when I was looking and the shark just feels like cheap plastic.

We've had a Carpet Pro CPU 2t for almost 15 years. They're a little harder to find than when I got it on Amazon, but you can find them online. I've only changed the belt a time or two and, of course, bags a couple of times a year. Sure, its less convenient than the bagless but it works better than other machines I've used. My mom insisted on a Kirby when I was growing up and I had to vacuum with it. I never liked that machine and I HATED emptying it.

The cool thing about mine is, if it isn't vacuuming right, either the bag is full (almost all the time -- i.e. that's what's wrong when it isn't picking stuff up) or the belt is broken (twice a decade at most). Otherwise its the best vacuum I've ever used. Parts are readily available.

We ended up getting this one. It is really good. I will see if it lasts.

I had a cheaper Shark for years that did ok. After we got a dog a year and a half ago, I realize how terrible it was at actually getting dog hair out of carpet. It was awful!

I looked at a lot of vacuums to replace it with, and ultimately decided to give a much better (and more expensive) Shark a shot. It was pretty leery, given my previous experience with Shark, but the reviews on this one were consistently great. I figured I'd give it a shot and just return it if it was not significantly better. I used it one time, and I was sold!

Just got a Henry canister vac today. Our house is all tile so this little thing is perfect (no need for a powered head). This thing is simple in a "I'll last longer than you" sort of way. Highly recommended if the extent of your carpeting is a couple of low/medium pile rugs!
