We are looking at a potential addition on the side of our house but the gas service line owned by Centerpoint that connects to the meter runs right under where we are considering building.

Anyone here been through the process of having the utility out to move one that can give an idea of cost and process?

I tried calling centerpoint a few times last week to ask but hung up after waiting on hold for 20+ minutes each time and never getting through to a person.

I did a garage extension in February of last year and Centerpoint charged $350 to move my gas meter, riser, and the gas line coming off the main. I can't find a direct number but below is the contact information of the individual that I worked with to get the payment processed and the required form signed. Hopefully he still works there.

OP, I would be surprised if they do this at all. They would not willingly give up an easement.

Good afternoon,

We received your request to change the meter location at ###. This request changes the location of the gas lines, meter, and riser. The cost to change the meter location is $350.00. Attached are the online payment instructions and conditions form that should be completed for the request. Please send the form back with your payment confirmation.

Things to remember:
If you are changing your meter location then you will need to have a plumber move your house line from the meters current location to the meters new location.
If you are within the city limits you will need a city inspection Contact City for inspection requirements.
Make sure that the proposed area has been staked or marked
If this a pool or an addition it will need to be outlined
CNP gas line cannot be located under any part of a structure
Gas line cannot be under a house, garage etc.
Anything in the new meter location area must be cleared before work can be done
(Tree Roots, Landscaping, Decking, Patio, Sidewalk, Sprinkler, Gas Lights, Gas Grill, etc.)

Please reply to this email with your confirmation number and form once payment has been made, not doing so will delay the order being created.

I think they will do it. The service line doesn't even run through the easements identified on our survey which are all by the property line. It comes right next to the house parallel to the wall I want to do the extension on

Just started this process. Was on hold for an hour but got my case number. Should be 5 days before someone from "business processes" gets ahold of me to discuss it.

Anyone by chance know of meters are allowed to be freestanding by a back fence? There is not a good place for the meter on a house wall and plumber is recommending we run poly piping from the house out into the yard to meet the meter. Said it would also shorten duration I am without gas. I think biggest issue is that underground line becomes my issue to maintain and mark for utilities.

Curious how long you were without gas? Plumber originally said I'd be without gas for a day but now he's saying closer to a week.. not going to go over well with the wife.

Centerpoint finally got back to me and waiting on a site visit with their contractor. Still probably 3-5 weeks out from completion.

I've seen some older houses where the gas meter was literally in the middle of the back yard or near a phone pedestal. Fairly certain my buddy who lived off TC Jester had that in the backyard.

I agree with your thoughts; after the meter, you would be responsible for the line, maintenance and marking.

Looks like I sent the request forms in on 12/21 and the reconnection was completed on 02/09. I wasn't living at the property at the time so I wasn't pushing them to complete the work.

My gas was out only a half a day. The plumber ran all the stuff before centerpoint put the new line and meter in and said to let him know what day they were coming and he would send somebody out that afternoon to hook it up and cap off the old meter location. And he did what he said he would. Maybe I just got a good plumber.

Re-upping an old thread.

We are just finishing a remodel and my contractor re-routed/stubbed out a new 2-inch line exiting behind the garage so that we can move the meter and will also have direct access for a Kohler generator. As long as that line is stubbed out of the wall, will CP come out and dig/make a new tap and install the new meter?

Yes.

Once your new piping has passed the city inspection Centerpoint run a new line from their main to your stubout and set the meter.

From the time we passed inspection it was about 4 days for centerpoint to come out and connect (2022).
