Moving an AC Compressor

I need to move my AC Compressor approximately 3 feet to gain clearance to my back gate (can't get things like larger mowers and a stump grinder to my back yard). I was quoted $1,400 to move it and it's doesn't require any additional copper (it actually shortens the span). I'm told the cost is in labor - have to pump the coolant out, etc. The compressor was manufactured in 2013 and works fine. All this makes me wonder if I am going to pay $1,400 to move it I should go ahead and put a new compressor on it. Thoughts?

I thought they had flexible lines? If you are shortening can't you get away with some bending? It seems very high for that amount of work.

Maybe I'm wrong. Get another estimate

Maybe make the gate swing the other direction?

Unfortunately, it's not the swing.

New concrete/pad needed?
Power and stat wires? Do they have to be re-pulled if not long enough?

Get another quote. I moved mine about a year ago 10 ft away from the house to put concrete in for a future build. It was a total of $250. Although I am in small town USA.

No new pad….the distance I neede it move actually makes it closer to the power and copper.

I mean I'd definitely get another quote, but I've always heard the most important part of A/C is the install and that a ****ty install will negate a good unit. Would suck to cheap out on them moving it then have issues.

Hopefully eviromax chimes in and can let you know if he thinks it's reasonable or not.

Here's a data point for reference. I called EnviroMax about a year ago and got a quote on moving a condenser unit about 30-35 feet. That meant they would have to lengthen lineset, add even more refrigerant than what was captured, etc. Without coming to look at it, he gave me a ballpark price over the phone of $1200-$1300.

I'm cool with the price that Enviromax gave me because its a pretty significant distance and includes more lineset and refrigerant, but I think that price for moving ~3 feet and actually shortening things up is a little too high.

I'm in Houston - you guys recommend Enviromax? Did I catch that he might be on this board?

Yes and Yes. Username is 88agswin but he hasn't posted in a few days. In his last post he stated his wife was having health issues so may be taking care of that:

I would be glad to get you a quote on a couple of units...Yes there are supply chain problems still but we have ordered a bunch over the last 6 months to get an inventory built up and have equipment in stock in our 7500 sq. ft. warehouse. My office number is 713-466-7555 and my mobile is 832-347-0807. My name is Jim Wolf class of '88.

My business partner is Tyler and his mobile is 832-920-3757. He will be the one coming out to get you a quote as my wife is having some health issues and I am her uber driver to her doctor appointments!! Feel free to call him tonight if you like.

Yes, absolutely call Jim at EnviroMax. He installed two complete Trane systems at my house almost 8 years ago now, and they have been perfect since then. They also come to my house once a year for service/filter changes, and his guys are always clean, professional, and on time.

I asked Enviromax about doing this several months ago. If memory serves, they quoted ~$1k. It may have been $1400 like you were quoted. They didn't have to add/subtract the line set. This was essentially just evacuating the lines, moving the compressor, and hooking it back up to another spot where the line set entered the house. I too thought it was high and decided to just wait until the compressor failed to do it.

Thanks Venkman…what's making me mad is this is all so we can get a stump grinder into our back yard.

If it's just a temporary project like grinding a stump, is there another section of fence you can remove and put back up?

Or how many stumps? Can also use a couple guys and an axe. Labor will be more but not move your ac more I wouldn't think. We did this recently as we're in a townhome and our gate/backyard entry was too small for a stump grinder.

The fence is a little tricky. As far as trees…it's 3 fairly good size Red Oaks. Good point on digging it out. Maybe just get a couple more quotes.

There are also other ways to get rid of stumps without grinding you may want to look into. Drilling a bunch of holes in them and dropping a product in them to speed up decomposition.

What's tricky about the fence ?

Wood ? Metal ?

Could you bribe the neighbor to come through their yard and take one section down temporarily?

How big of stump ?

Dr. Doctor

Metal barrel
Leaf blower
Lighter fluid

Burn the stump(s) out.

No moving anything.

Definitely look into burning the stumps out.
