Great! I got the one step down (no light...slightly slower production) but read a lot of good things so glad to hear you are enjoying so far!

We put a Scotsman in our new build 7 years ago. No problems and still running strong. I clean it about once a year although the clean light comes on after 6 months.

I think guests like it more than we do though. Several of my wife's friends and some of her family always get some while they're at our house and refill before they leave. It's the Sonic style ice. My wife and I drink water without ice 99% of the time.

Glad to hear. We just ordered a Scotsman Brilliance Cuber. This will be my first ice machine ever and looking forward to it.

Do you have a leak detector installed with it by chance? I am planning on having the installer add one similar to a water heater. The house we bought had a large portion of floors damaged from the previous ice machine leaking....

I don't have a leak detector, but the ice maker has a hose that goes into a floor drain directly beneath the ice maker. It also sits on a brick floor, so not too worried about floor damage.

Ahh ok. I am a slightly different situation. We don't have a gravity drain + we have hardwood floors in the area. Not super concerned about it but any little thing I can do to try and avoid floor damage I will take the added "insurance"

How loud are these things?

Ours is the Scotsman (maybe top end? it has a light inside) sonic style ice. It's in a hallway area bar and can't really be heard during the day. When it's dead quiet at night, you can hear the ice dropping if you're in an adjacent room, but all our bedrooms are on the opposite side of the house, so we can't hear it.

My parents have a cube style (not sure what brand) but the ice drop is significantly louder. Their kitchen is in the middle of their 1st floor and I think the noise is audible through that floor when it's very quiet.

In my limited research, and I think maybe people have mentioned it here on previous threads, the majority of noise complaints are those that have drain pumps, rather than gravity drains. The drain pump is what makes a lot of noise, not the compressor or the ice dropping.

We won't need ours for months but in light of current delays, I may go ahead and purchase now. Thinking Scotsman. Does anyone have any recs for an online source and/or local Houston dealer? Appreciate it!

If that is only appliance I would shop lowest price via google. The ones I listed earlier are pump and panel ready but don't have the stainless panel. Don't pay more than that. I used Ferguson. I assume they are in Houston.

My in laws have a manitowoc. It's quiet, and has the drain pump. The first one lasted 7 years. They've had this one for about 5 years.

We've been living here for a few weeks while we go through a remodel. It's not a big deal for everyone, but if I were buying one, I'd look at the size of the ice cubes. Their maker has rather large cubes, they won't fit into my running bottles, some of my wife's workout bottles, etc. Again, not huge, you can use the fridge ice maker for that. But if I'm dropping $3k on an ice maker I'd want to use it for all those things.

Their scoop slides into grooves in the door. The one at my office has a holder for the scoop in the ice compartment. I prefer the one inside the compartment, personally.

And maybe I'm imagining things but I'd swear the ice from their maker melts faster in water than fridge ice.

Clear ice melts slowest. Most undercounted ice makers are clear ice but some are not.

My Hozi loud sound is the nugget ice mechanism and I suppose the compressor. . Not the pump. Not the ice dropping (only loud in an empty bin).

I'm planning to buy the True brand ice maker, beverage fridge, and kegerator for an outdoor kitchen build. Any brand I should consider instead of True?

Subzero, uLine are also in the same tier as True. I never got to the point of pricing uline but True and Subzero are MAP pricing and are fairly close to each other if I recall correctly.

This is correct. Uline has some slightly lower if I remember right but correct analysis of Tier.

I was at Jarrell Company in Dallas the other day (did not buy from there but had I "found" it earlier it would have been in consideration) and they sell all 3 and the lady said she typically prefers True over Sub for ice machine but she says when it comes to doing packages, etc if you are already doing Sub / Wolf then you are better off sticking with the Sub ice maker.

The only other thing is I don't believe Sub Zero has any sort of kegerator so if you want all the same line in your outdoor setup, True will definitely be the way to go.

My Hoshi already needs cleaning / descaling after 2 months. Went to get ice and it was about to overflow.

Such a stupid design flaw.

I would say that for normal families, the high cost must be justified against many trips to buy ice,
then vs tabletop ice makers for $150 or less.

The only ice makers I've designed in houses are justified by:
> Many parties, be they social or for biz
> 6 or more kids added to load
> hunter/fisherman needs
> thru-the-window drive-thru places selling ice bags (McD used to) proximity
> Million dollar house luxury
> Invalid needs, which may also include for meds

Reportedly Scotsman brand lasts x2 as long

Other:
might want a floor drain nearby, similar to one near washer

FYI: because the internal ice trays are upside down, only the purest water freezes to it and the rest goes down the drain (SOP for RO system filters) + the freshest ice is on top and the oldest ice on bottom, which gets heated/melted down the internal drain (yes, old ice can make one sick)

Opinion:
Sans any of the exceptional needs listed above, that appliance money could upgrade some appliances, add a MW #2, trash compactor, HD Disposer, even a small chest freezer that holds ice bags
Ten words or less ... a goal unattainable

Follow up questions for your guys with Scotsmans. I'm looking to buy the Brilliance cube machine - SCCG50MB-1SS. We're installing this at the right side end (when facing) of our bar so it's right next to a door frame opening. The hinges are generally on the right side of these things and I'm concerned about whether the ice make will open adequately right next to the door frame.

The 2 online retail shops I spoke with both tell me that, while the "panel ready" model has a reversible door, the stainless model is not reversible. However, I called Scotsman and they told me they're all reversible. The Scotsman guy even showed me where the instructions are in the manual.

On the other hand, I'm wondering if the door will open fine anyway even if the hinges are on the right. That would be much more functional (door opening to right) if the door frame didn't get in the way.

So I guess my questions are...do any of you have a Scotsman (or other brands for that matter) that are adjacent to a door frame/wall with hinges on that same side? Does it open enough?

Have any of you reversed the doors on the brilliance cube stainless model?...or know any reason why it would/wouldn't be reversible vs the panel ready?

Appreciate any help!

Recent relevant pro-tip - check your radiator grill. Mine is tucked under the door and it was filthy.

My Hoshi bit the dust after only 3 years. The part itself is $2k so likely just buying new. The Scottsman model is actually a bit more expensive once you add the pump (reuse the one I have with the Hoshi).

I am following up on this discussion from a year or 2 ago

I am in the process of building a house and am planning on putting in an under counter ice maker.

I went to the sub zero store and found out that they no longer make/sell Ice makers. They are now offering Scotsman ice makers.

For those of of you installed a Scotsman in the past few years, are you happy?

Do you have a gravity drain unit or a pump drain unit?

Any other general comments would be appreciated

We are 8 months into our Scotsman. We really like it. To be honest, it's a bit noisy but now it's just a sound that is "part of the house". We use it daily. Kids use it multiple times a day (9 and 7). Really good when we have 2+ families over.

I did the 6 month cleaning a few weeks back and only took a few hours and most of that was cycling the cleaner out.

We looked at the sun zero ice maker and it had nicer cubes but I am fairly sure Scotsman made it too and our cubes look really nice as it is.

Edit: pump drain. Scc30P. Brilliance cyber. Liked the larger cubes for most drinks.

We have a KitchenAid, pump drain, that replaced an older unit that did not cycle, just dumped ice. It gives a notice to cleanse and change the filter. Like plano says, it is noisy, but you get used to it for the most part. Similarly, cleaning is pretty simple. It's great to have for convenience, especially when you want to top off a cooler because I keep about 6 bags in the bottom of my freezer for such occasions or to help fill the freezer in case power goes out.

It was mostly the War Department's decision, I didn't mind the old one and wasn't real thrilled with the cycling at the beginning. If this is close to the living room in a bar area, you will hear it. It's not like a quiet dishwasher.

Let me know if you have any follow up questions.

ETA: Ours makes the small cubes, good for drinks.
