Getting ready to move a 15 foot section of a cast iron fence from the back left corner of my house to the front left corner of my house. And then adding 20 feet to fill the gap. I'm prepping that side of the house to have a storage shed as well as a pool pump and filter to be added when we install a pool.

Fencing folks gave 1400.00 as an estimate.

I learned that Lowes had identical black aluminum fencing for about 12 dollars a linear foot with posts at 23 bucks. I'm trying to decide whether to dug up and cut the 20 foot section, move it up, install it and add the 20 feet of aluminum fencing. Total cost, aside from my own labor would be about 300 bucks.

Any inputs? Is this a doable job or should I hire the pros?

If you installed the aluminum fencing, please provide your thoughts. I'm looking at going with DIY aluminum fence as well

Post and panel aluminum fence is about the simplest kind of fence to install. If it's at Lowe's, it's probably made by Barrette, and you should be able to find install instructions on their site. That being said, I've seen a number of my neighbors DIY aluminum fence and it comes out looking like ****, mostly because they can't set the posts plumb.

Also, just beware that what they are selling at Lowe's is a lesser version of that the "pros" install.

Thanks! I might not do DIY if the fences are higher quality at the wholesalers. Anything in particular i should ask a professional fence company about grade or finish? I'm really looking at it for as maintenance free as I can get.

That said the recent cedar fence thread has me wondering how I can assess the fence companies without any personal recommendations.

Basic residential grade should be fine, just make sure they are quoting a big name brand, not some off brand.

As far as companies, look for someone who is obviously one of the larger contractors, and has a bunch of good online reviews and you should be fine. You'll pay more for those guys, but you know the old saying.
