Homedepot has general sizing guidelines of what different appliances use. I got a new 3800 Honda for super cheap and plug it in to my RV outlet or dryer receptacle to power my home. I'm on propane so it runs both blowers and keeps my home toasty. In summer I can run up or down HVAC with no problem.

Generator super center can guide you and give you a sales pitch.

I've been trying to decide between a transfer switch and more generic plug to the breaker box but didn't think about my 240 plug in the garage. Can I just get a male to male cord, turn off main & all not-needed breakers and fire it up?

Yeah, I get that and that's fine since I won't use it until I get a huge air compressor or Tesla, which won't be anytime soon. An electrician I'm texting says I need a different plug, is that a code or real issue?

I was thinking I could get these to hook it up.

I'm thinking I should replace it with a real backfeed plug.

Please don't create or buy male to male power cables. They're called suicide cables for a reason. If you're going to do it, do it the right way.

Why'd you delete your post? I thought your suggestion of getting putting in a plug to match what's coming off of the generator was a good idea and that's what I'm planning on doing.

Definitely not doing a male to male cord, cause male to male is dangerous.

My understanding is that you want the plug on the non-generator end of the cable to be a female plug so the prongs can't touch anything when it is not plugged into the wall.

I have an old 5000 watt portable generator that I've used here and there after hurricanes to keep fridges running via extension cords. But I'm thinking I might go the interlock route and upgrade my portable generator one of these days. DUMB QUESTION: Why would I need more than 12,000 running watts (higher for startup) in this portable setup? Aren't I limited to 12,000 running watts by the 50amp plug, unless I want to run extension cords too? Just curious when I see these 15000+ running watt portables.

Anyone ever gotten a quote on a whole home unit through Costco?

Not a complete answer but two thoughts: if you run the unit off of propane or NG it derates its output. Also, there is at least one unit I'm aware of with a 60amp outlet.
