The garbage disposal looks like it died this evening. We, the wife mainly, have been toying with replacing the standard 2 hole builders grade stainless sink with a black single hole drop in for a year or so. Looks like this is going to be the time to do it if we ever were going to.

Looking for recommendations, hints/tips, or flat out reasons to just replace the disposal and leave the sink.

Pretty handy, mostly woodwork and basic eclectic, I've done a little plumbing in the past but nothing like this.

Replacing a disposal is easy, just need a little time and plumbers putty.

Replacing the sink would, I assume, mean completely redoing the plumbing. That might include the dishwasher as well. And you still have to replace the disposal.

But if you have the time, go for it!

Get on this project immediately before she decides the countertop needs a change.

Don't forget to update the faucet.

If the new sink is deeper than existing you may have to use a reversible trap

I've never installed any black sinks

Have removed a few due the fact that they showed more flaws and wear compared to lighter color of stainless. I know they are supposed to be granite composition and scratch resistant but neither customer liked them after a while because they showed flaws from dishes hitting the bottom of them. I believe both were Franke like this

Maybe they were just outliers or the customers were really rough on them but after seeing how they held up i would never put one in my own house.

If you use the right kind, replacing the disposal takes 10 minutes because you can use the old mounting bracket. No plumbers putty required.

And sinks are heavy. Especially if it's enameled cast iron.
