Who's got a good solution for annihilating ants mounds in the yard? I've used the spot powders, whole lawn granular insecticide, Ortho sprays, etc. These jokers just move around my yard and pop up in a new spot after a few days. I want to nuke them out.

What have you used that worked?

I use this stuff every late spring / summer. I initially started applying it to deal with chiggers, which seem to pop up every year. That said, it seems to take care of everything. I rarely see ants as well.

It would help your cause if you can coordinate with your neighbors to treat at the same time. Fiprinil recommended is best but there are cheaper options, especially if you are treating over an acre.

Dr Drees and Dr Nester had a study that resulted in a new product called Extinguish Plus. It is applied April and Oct. 1.5 lb/acre each date.

I have used extinguish and a similar product called advion from syngenta. I have found the advion to be much better. It needs to be applied when ants are actively feeding and applied when guaranteed 3-4 days of dry weather.

This, once a year. Never see them again. Legally, in Texas at least, you are supposed to be a licensed applicator. Worth the price.

I always do it in the spring.

Extinguish is basically just Hydramethylnon like Amdro.
Extinguish Plus is Extinguish combined with an IGR (insect growth regulator, ant birth control)

It's been awhile since I looked at Advion, but recall it was more $$. Extinguish Plus was under $200 for 25 lb bag. I'm just commenting on 10 Acre or larger. For the 1/4 acre suburban lawns, the Advion and Others mentioned above are a reasonable cost.

I have only ever used the extinguish plus. Award II and Advion are both better in my opinion. I tried to save a couple hundred and use the extinguish plus one year and I wasn't happy. This was for 100+ acres (golf course).

Pour a bag of ant killer in the spreader you use to fertilize, then go over your entire yard with it. I usually do this a week or so after I fertilize. Usually good for 4-5 months. When I see another one pop up, I know it's time to do it again.

I ordered Taurus liquid (fiprinil) and a sprayer on Amazon 3 weeks ago. Ants are gone, haven`t seen one since.

I've always just spot treated with a liquid concentrate mixed in a 5gal bucket. Stab the mound with a shovel and pour the mix in. That way I'm not killing everything in my yard. Use the same stuff for perimeter defense 3-4 times a year applied from a pump sprayer.

Congrats on breaking the law. (I am only kidding but you are breaking the law)

Also, how much did you use?

Hardly any. Got the $40 bottle and have prolly $39 worth of product left.

You should see all the other shady stuff on Amazon.

Just for reference, the equivalent rate for the liquid as compared with the granular is 2oz/A. So assuming you have a normal .25A lot, you should have only used .5oz or 1 tablespoon. I hear stuff like this all the time and the TDA wonders why I seem perturbed when they audit my application records.

I now have a 1 acre lawn, all bermuda grass and we are starting to see ants pop up. Unofficially speaking, is the Taurus a good idea? Granules and a spreader?

Reading the label on Taurus is says not to use on a golf course. We do not live on a golf course, but was curious as to what the issue is.

We also do not have termites that we know of (house is 11 years old), but previous owners have the bait traps and the pest control company wants to replenish.

If I bought the Taurus and a sprayer, any particular reason not to DIY?

Taurus is basically Termindor. Ants don't stand a great chance.

Use as directed- A little bit does the trick.

Bait Traps for Termites are a Sales tool to get longterm business; do they work ? not as good as Taurus

Following Cevans calcs the smallest bottle is good for 10 applications which per others is good for one year each.

Exactly 6 months later, still NOT ONE ANT MOUND. i'm a believer in the fip liquid.

I will still research application instructions, but did you essentially just spray on the grass over whole yard? Flower beds? Edge of house?

And we have 3 dogs. How long does it need to sit before dogs can go out?

- if you power sprayed a whole yard ( always according to labels ). , it takes ~15 mins maybe for it to dry. We tell customer to wait an hour or two if at all worried for things like flea treatments.

( when you try to kill pests , they tend to get stirred up and bite. So a little extra time might be appreciated by pets)

Most Flea shampoos and heart worm medicine are basically pesticides when you break down the active ingredients.

Most recent rain showed me how many damn ants I've got.

Is this the stuff?

https://www.amazon.com/Unknown-Fipronil-Plus-C-Insecticide/dp/B08MQN298G/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=1OLLI21PUDKIH&keywords=fipronil&qid=1661515516&sprefix=fipr%2Caps%2C105&sr=8-3

If so…how does one use a hose end sprayer like JS has linked in the post above? Trying to figure how the mixing rates work to be sure I'm not under/over applying.

This would be on Approx 1/2 acre that kiddos run on. Hoping it knocks back ants and then chiggers in spring.

** ah I see. It's got a gpm rate dial.

Any reviews on how fipronil has worked on ants?

Advion is the most effective treatment available, but it is more expensive. Its a bait and is best used in early spring when the ants begin to forage and then again in the fall.

Once the ants are under control use mound spot treatments of a pyrethroid (bifenthrin, lambda-cyhalothrin, etc.) or acephate. This method is termed the Texas Two-Step Method and is research backed by Texas A&M.

Since the 80s on this acre have tried everything, even as recommended by Neil Sperry, Land.arch & Landscape buddies only to see them come back when wet ... even after an Arizona summer like 2022.

Stumbled across a "very safe" powder I thought was a specialty item for pool filters or horse barns and BOY does it work! None of the others came so close to getRdone Fast & long lasting. I do have to avoid bee attractants, e.g. blooming flowers, etc .. I think.

Simple answer. Top Choice (Fiprinil) is #1. Talstar (bifenthrin) granules are #2 as it is cheaper but still very effective. The major difference besides cost is Top Choice lasts a year and Talstar lasts about 3 months. You can get both at Site One.
