Looking to plant an evergreen hedge in front of my back wrought iron fence for privacy. Doesn't need to be much taller than 7 feet, but needs to be thick and green Was looking at wax myrtles or a privet of some type. Also looked at American holly Anyone have any good recommendations for something like this?

Wax Myrtle is perfect for this. Mine grow like a weed and trim up nicely twice a year.

Do you want it to grow on your fence or just in front of?

We have jasmine and really like it...doesn't get too woods and easy to trim tops and thin out.

Preferably in front of the fence. How tall and deep are your jasmines?

Any type of holly in particular?

They are about 7' ft tall and maybe 2-3' ft deep. They grow like a vine and spread quickly IF you water them everyday in the heat.

We had large gaps that didn't bother us until development started behind our home. So we finished planting another 5-6 plants to fill it out.

They smell amazing in the spring.

Seems like most prefer Nellie Stevens. We don't have any since they are so pokey.

where are you located? If you're in north texas I definitely would not plant southern wax myrtle since they don't like clay (alkaline) soils and will be short lived, not to mention weak wooded (ice or storm winds will break them). Our favorite privacy shrubs to install are Hollies (Nellie R. Stevens, Oakleaf, Eagleston, Mary Nell, Foster, Savannah (can become chlorotic in alkaline soils)), Little Gem or Teddy Bear Magnolia, Spartan or spearmint Juniper, Loropetalum (regular), wax leaf ligustrum (least favorite)

We have ligustrums for a screen and they're pretty thick and can get plenty tall. Ours are about 8 feet high now. Need to trim some to keep thick.

I had ligustrums long ago and HATED them. They get very woody and thick. You will eventually have to lop them off with a chain saw or heavy-duty clippers.

Yeah...forgot to add...I'm not doing them at our new place. They're not good for smaller spaces.
