I'm finishing up the nursery for kiddo #2 and need to order a closet organization system. I took out the crappy one shelf above the hanger rod that's been there since the house was built in the 70s.

I found Closet Organizers USA online and they had an interface that let you plug in the dimensions of the closet and based on existing combo of pieces "design" a semi custom closet. Nothing over the top, the shelves were Ikea partical board quality, but nicer than the one size fits all options at Home Depot.

Then the day after I paid they contacted me to let me know shipping hadn't been charged correctly at check out and it would come to $400+. Since it was previously free and the closet system was less than $700 I laughed and immediately cancelled the order.

Is there any other similar options out there I should look into?

EasyClosets.com

We used them for our master closet on our remodel. It sounds very similar - online interface, everything comes custom-cut to the sizes you create in the online layout. Particle board pieces that go together like Ikea furniture. Everything mounts on a rail/track that you screw into the studs.

We were very happy with how it turned out.

One note, before you place your order they recommend you call and have one of their "experts" review your design. It's free, and when I did it, she caught a few things that would have caused some major headaches (i.e. don't forget to taken thickness of door casing into account if putting a set of drawers right next to the door).

There were a couple of pieces that didn't fit just right (they were cut per the dimensions, my room being out of square caused the issues). They re-cut those pieces and sent them to me with no issues.

They run sales pretty regularly so don't pay full price.

I'll second EasyClosets as well.

Tore out the junk shelf and rod in my two kids who are sharing a bedroom and have plenty of space now for hanging clothes and shelves for both of them. Even though the closet itself is pretty small.

I've toy'ed with doing our master closet, but just can't seem to pull the trigger. At this point we're designing a new house and I'll definitely look into their system again for all the closets.

If your wall isn't flat (mine definitely isn't) you'll want to shim the gaps otherwise the panels won't line up or fit together properly. Other than that, install was easy peasy.

FYI, just got an email from EasyClosets that they're running a 20% off sale through August 10th.

Like I said, they have sales all the time (this one will likely be extended beyond 8/10), so if you (or anybody else goes this route), never pay full price.
