Choosing an Electric Provider

It's that time of the year for me again. Time to renew another electricity contract. I currently have reliant and they have had good rates. I have paid less than $75 a month and 2 months in the winter were below $40. Now my electric rate is going to jump from $0.072/kWh to $.102/kWh. Some of these companies seem to have some crazy tiers in their plans. I was looking at power to choose and there is one plan that is $25 a month unless you go over 1000 kWh. They say that you can monitor your electricity online and get weekly text. If you go over 1000 kWh, they charge you $125. I went over my bill from Reliant and I only went over 1000 for 1 month. Over the course of a year, the $25 a month is cheaper even with the one month going over by about $250 a year. It seems like a no brainer. I think I could be more conscience that month about my energy. I know that the weather is very hot and my home will take energy to cool this next month. Is there anything I should be watching out for in a plan like this? The company is "Infuse Energy". Other companies that offer this are:
"Express" and "Life Energy"
Any advice or any reason to be wary of these companies would be helpful.
TIA

I've used many of the "Cut Rate" companies, including Infuse Energy. The plans I normally get are similar to the one you mentioned but I cannot use less than a thousand. My plan is usually along the lines of 11 to 10 cents a kilowatt until I use a 1000 killowat, then I get something along the lines of a $80 credit, meaning my final bill is usually in the range of 30 to $50 4 1000 to 1300 kilowatts.

I love those type of plans because I don't mind going out to my meter and checking our usage once a week or so to make sure we are on track to use at least 1000.

Edit: powertochoose.org is what I always use

There is a long thread on this board about a company called Energy Ogre, they are not a provider, but shop for the best plan for you.

I had a plan that I was very happy with, but it's no longer available, I will look to see if they find something that fits for me.

I do have a few friends that have used them and were very happy.

I use them and couldn't be happier. Doesn't cost you anything to see what they estimate they can save you over 1 year by just providing them your details via their website link below:

https://www.energyogre.com/

They estimated they could save me $1,200 over the first year if I signed up with them for $10/month. I was extremely skeptical, but they paid for themselves for the entire first year ($120) the first month alone as my bill was over $140 cheaper than it would have been had I not signed up with them and let them switch me to the best option provider available at the time. They find better deals than the government's powertochoose website. Check out the thread below for more info and testimonials:

Use www.texaspowerguide.com. Enter your zip code and then enter as much of your post 12 months of electricity usage (in kWh) as you can. Then change the contract term from 12-12 months to 3-60 months. You'll get a custom list of providers, showing who is the cheapest for your house.

If you have a smart meter, then you can register at smartmetertexas.com to get your past usage. Select the monthly readings when looking at your meter data.

Good luck!

I just renewed with TXU (in Dallas area) for 9.3 cents for the first 500 kwh, 4.8 for the next 500, and 16.7 after that. The 16.7 rate is high, but we average less than 1K per month and have only gone over 1400 7 times in 2 years. That means most of our bills will be far less than $70 a month, some less than $40. From what I can tell that's a small savings over what we pay now but rates have gone up, so you might not save go forward.

I'd suggest you figure out how much you use each month and analyze it. I'm willing to pay about $15 a month more in July and August to get that as savings most other months, and $25 2-4x a year. But for those that use 2k a month of kwh or more, you need to find a different plan.

Prior to installing a new AC in 2011, my summer bills were close to or over $400.

Has anyone used Champion? I'm finding them to be about the cheapest right now based on my usage.

Also, do you think it would be worth it to pay a little more for a 6 month plan to get my renewal date into January instead of July? Southwest Power & Light has a decent rate available on a 6-month plan.

I've used Energy Ogre for a few years, but they just signed me up for a 12 month plan starting in August at 10.5cents/kwh. Why in the world would you sign up for a 12 month plan during a peak month? Even the estimates they sent me show my fall, winter and spring bill being higher than ever before. I'll be canceling tomorrow.

I've used Champion with no issues. Couldn't get a decent rate after the teaser contract so went elsewhere.

We also use awesome power. They look at your usage thru smart meter to calculate your best plan & it is free. Started by some Coppell grads & I now have my entire family using them to purchase the lowest priced plans.
