I cannot find the valve control for zone 2 in my yard. What is the best way to do this?

You think it has been covered over with dirt I assume?

yes, its definitely covered by something. I have 4 zones and have 3 of the boxes located.

aren't the boxes in close proximity to each other?

If not, you might dig around each head in the zone in question and see where the pvc points to...they might all point somewhere that makes sense for the controller to be in.

One would think, however they are not close. Zone 1 is in the front yard, zones 3 and 4 are in the back yard.

I found all 6 of mind using a friends metal detector when we moved into our current home. I flagged each sprinkler head and then detected the areas between the heads to locate the boxes.

This is likely your best bet. Figure out where all your heads are in then walk at 90 degree angles with a metal detector, a shove, or piece of rebar. Doubtful they are buried too deep. Just probe around a bit.
