I *think* the settings on the spreader are how many pounds of fertilizer drop per square foot of lawn.

I just bought some local 19-5-9 fertilizer, and they don't have my spreader listed. The Scott's website wants a UPC to give me the answer, but I don't have that because the fertilizer is bagged locally for my garden center.

So if it says 5-7 pounds per 1,000 sq ft, I assume I put the spreader settings on 6 and go? Any other advice?

Randy Lemmon recommends a notch or two above half on broadcast spreaders for applications of fertilizers. If it's a handheld with five or less settings open it up all the way.

The College Station garden show used to recommend using half the setting you normally would. Then covering the yard and two different directions for more even coverage.

I just always set mine based on what "feels" right.

Set it, start spreading, then dial up or down based on gut feel.
