Anyone ever return plants that don't make it through the winter in their first year? I had a *****ly pear cactus that didn't make it through the hard freeze this past winter. However, I feel kinda cheap bringing back an items 6 months later.

Don't feel cheap about it. My dad runs a tree farm in his semi-retirement and warranties trees in the first year. Sometimes it is user error; sometimes bad luck on weather; sometimes transplant just doesn't take. Stuff happens.

I think you need your receipt or original bucket for HD. I always try to keep the bucket but usually lose the receipts so I've never returned a plant, but I see people doing it all the time.

I keep the tree tag. I planted 5 trees last spring (2 peach, 2 pear, 1 plum). I stapled the tags on a spot on the inside of the garage in corresponding order that they are planted in the back yard. This so I can remember which tree is which and to know which tree was from which store. I bought some from Home Depot and some from Calloway's.

Free Advice.

Don't buy trees from HD. The markup for them is huge.

Don't buy immature trees.

Don't go cheap on soil around your trees when you plant them.

I returned ten 10 gallon shrubs that died, everyone of them. After talking to the guy, we decided there was maybe too much sun (though he initially recommended these), so went with another. I just sent in pictures, didn't need to bring the carnage in.

Absolutely return them. I spent like $300 on those, I'm not just gonna say f-it and absorb that cost.
