Thinking about buying a cheaper, lighter, thinner flat screen TV for our covered patio instead of going the more expensive route with a true TV made for the outdoors. My neighbor did this and said so far his cheap TV has lasted 3 years with no issues. Any others have similar experience or advice?

You'll be fine. Just buy a good cover for it. I had an indoor tv outside in the hot south Texas heat for 4 years. Never had any problems.

We cycled our oldest tv outside so it might of had three or four years on it when it went outside. After three years it was still working perfectly. Our was far enough in that we didn't cover it.

I bought the cheapest 50" TV they had at Costco for my patio. It's been 2 years now and no problems. I even bought the extended 5 year warranty for $50. If it stops working I'll haul inside and inform the warranty folks that I need a new TV.

I have a very inexpensive Vizio on my patio. It has been there for 18 months and works fine. We did go on Amazon and buy a good cover for it. I do take my DTV box in when I know it is going to rain.

When you shop for the wall mount, just find one that comes off easily.

Then, store the TV inside and bring it out on weekends.

I don't think you need to bring it in unless it's exposed to sun/rain. Mine has been fine through the 100F+ and the 20F ranges.

What the others have said. Just get a normal LCD, mount, you're good as long as it's far enough under the patio cover not to get rained on.

When it conks out, get another one.

Ditto here. This is probably the only time the warranty is worth it.

I had a regular TV outside at a bayhouse. It was under a covered patio and I covered it when not in use. I had to replace it once after 4 years and I just went to Best Buy and got a really cheap open box unit.

I have had a Toshiba outside under our covered patio on the wall for almost 8 years with no problems. I keep it covered when its not in use. I live in Houston and the only time it has come off the wall is a night I knew Temps were going to get close to freezing. Of course living in Houston that is very infrequent.

We had some deep freezes (20 F) this past winter and my TV was fine.

My FIL lives in Indianapolis and his TV has survived uncovered for years including temps down to 15 below. We even fired it up when it was 10 degrees for fun. Just don't use it when it is wet and you'll probably be fine.

Hubs got an open-box one years ago at Target. It's in a covered area but the side that risks exposure is loosely covered with a black garbage bag held on with duct tape. We have not given it any special treatment and it's been a champ.
