How long do you want to ignore this user?
I hired a company to put in a simple residential fence at my house. They put a sign in my yard advertising their company (like you sometimes see).

They didn't ask my permission to do this, is that typical?

Yes.

But the better answer is "Do you really want to tick them off before they are done?"

I've never had one do it but see it all the time, of course. I assumed they always asked first. If one asked me first I'd say it's fine, but if one did it without asking I would take it down and tell them not to put one up again... unless they were contrite about it. I wouldn't worry too much about pissing them off if you are paying them. And I'm not saying I would be a huge confrontational jerk about it or anything, by the way, just say I was surprised to see the sign and would prefer it wasn't in my yard.

Personally I wouldn't worry about it but an easy out is say the HOA pinged you on it. It's more than likely against HOA rules (assuming you have a HOA). I got a nastygram from the HOA when I was putting a pool in because of the dudes sign. I told the contractor and he said it happens quite a bit. We both talked about what a pain in the ass HOA's can be and he wasn't upset at all.

Like I said, an easy out is just tell him HOA told you to take it down.

I have had them do it before. Didn't have a problem with it at all because I figured it would encourage them to do a superior job since their name was on it. Honestly, its no different than them parking a truck out front with their info on it.

My HOA confiscates signs.

If it wasn't put to me prior, I would remove it myself. You want to advertise in my yard, pay me or give me a discount. Same reason I always remove (or have the dealer remove) the dealer sticker from my cars. You want me to drive around advertising your dealership, knock another $500-$1000 off the car. Unsurprisingly, no dealership has ever wanted to do that so off with their decal.

Not sure if this happens... but a thought that crossed my mind...

If the crew isn't a full time crew of the actual contractor it might help to leave it out there. They show up and know this job is for "Bobs fencing" or whomever and not a one-off.

My old pool contractor told me his guys do it for 2 valid reasons.

- of course advertising. very valid since there ARE neighbors contemplating pools that DO make note of who a trusted neighbor is using.

- Many of the trades " no hables ingles" and are simply told to go to such and such street and look for the sign coupled with the MANY MANY houses with obscured or worn out street numbers making it a chore. No one wants 4 concrete trucks driving back n forth looking for the number hidden behind a huge magnolia tree.......

Maybe the "advertising" discount is already factored into their estimate? I'm surprised that some think it's a big deal at all unless they are embarrassed by their contractor, or they are doing a terrible job.

Or they didn't pull a permit.

They could have it in the Ts and CS of the contract you signed.

I'd like to see the look the on the face of the poster above that sad 'take it out my yard or give me a discount for advertising' when the contractor replies, oh the price I quoted you is already lowered assuming the sign is in place. I'll take it out, but it will raise the price 5%.

'Ok leave it in.'

I live in a small town and the people that do work for me are typically customers or friends of mine. I want my friends and customers to succeed in their endeavors and don't mine one bit if they're so proud of their work that they throw a sign in my yard for a few day letting people know they're the company that did the work.

You folks who want to be "paid for advertising" need to relax and understand that this is how these people earn their living and a small sign in your yard is no big deal.

my folks got their roof redone and the company wanted to the sign as well--folks agreed if they gave them a discount

worth asking since there was zero talk about it before they staked your yard

Getting a quote for a roof replacement many years ago for my folks house, this was part of the deal.

They would knock off $500 or something (on your deductible) for having their sign in the yard from signing till they finished.

Another great example of folks looking for something to get worked up over. It's amazing to me how many people find joy in complaining about things.

Yeah, HOA's.

Not allowed by our HOA, but I have never known them to actually say anything unless the sign is out there for an extended period of time.
