I have a weed which seems to be taking over my yard that came from my neighbor. Ive never dealt with this and dont know how to kill it. Can you help me identify what it is?

It looks like st augustine, grows sideways of sorts, so its impossible to pick. What can i spray on it and not kill grass?

I put down a preemergent multiple times per year as randy lemmon would suggest, mow high, etc.

That was your first mistake in listening to Randy Lemmon and paying for those high price products he pushes. Take a sample and go to Producers Coop. in Bryan and talk with Dr. Bill Lazby, he will solve your problem. Better yet got to Neil Sperry's site and find the solution there. Be careful that the product you use is labeled for your lawn grass. If you use Imagine make sure you water it in good. The original Imagine will solve your problem but I not sure what grasses it harms. You must use it about 30 days apart and remember it is water activated.

That does not look like sandspur as it is growing from rhizomes. More likely that it's common bermuda.

Repeat applications of atrazine will hold it back (eventually kill it) and not hurt the St Augustine. For post emergence control of bermuda you want to avoid irrigation/rainfall that would wash the chemical off the leaves for the first day after application. Also read the label regarding how many days before and after application that you should avoid mowing. Usually 3 days but I haven't read the label to confirm.

And I agree, Randy is just a guy that pushes whatever products are willing to pay him the most.

Also, if it's just in a few areas you could use a foam paint brush to bush Roundup on the weedy grass. Will kill it for sure and lets you avoid getting the Roundup on your St. Augustine.

Guys thanks for the comments.

I only follow the schedule of Randy, but not his exact products, so your comments make me feel better. Although I never had problems like this when I was using my own method, so I'm beginning to wonder...

Anyway, I have St. Augustine grass.

I dont think this is bermuda grass, the blades of the weed look awfully like St. Augustine...in fact if you look at my other pictures, it is hard to tell it apart. Also, I seem to suck at posting pictures...thanks for your patience.

I was thinking it was some sort of crabgrass, but I am clueless.

In terms of using roundup, it has spread way too much for that to be a reasonable solution. But I guess I could give that a shot.

you can buy atrazine by itself. Ortho sells it. As usual add in a surfactant .

What kind of grass does your neighbor have? My first thought when I saw your pics was Zoysia.
