Stairs - Engineered vs. Solid Wood Treads

We are having engineered hardwoods glued down in 2 weeks. When we originally quoted the job, we included the stairs. When I asked the guy if he would be using solid treads, he said that he would use the engineered wood on the treads with a solid bull nose. I have since gotten a few quotes to re-frame a portion of the stairs from a closed outside stringer to an open stringer. The stair people priced a full remodel, including new solid wood treads.

I don't know that I've ever seen stairs done with engineered treads instead of solid wood, single piece treads. I'm concerned that we're not going to be as happy as if we'd just spend more and get the solid wood treads from the stair remodel company.

I've asked the flooring guy for pics of examples where they have used the engineered flooring on the stairs, but I wanted to get the HI board opinion on this as well while I wait for him to send the pics.

If you're ok with the stair company's price, get the credit back from the flooring guy for the stairs and get the hardwood treads. You'll be happier in the long run

i did my stairs with the same planks and bull nose. I was worried about staining the treads to match. I think it looks good both ways.

We went with solid treads, it was pricey but well worth it to us considering the amount of traffic and wear and tear our stairs get. Our flooring guy did the upstairs and I did the basement steps, I would have gladly paid him to do the basement by the time I finally finished them.

Mind sharing the quote you received for opening up and treading the stairs? We are looking to do the same. Also what city are you in?

The only quote I've received so far was for $5,798. However, that also included ~$700 worth of work I was going to do myself (demo). So all in, about $5,000 for 13 stairs, 5 of which get balusters.

As I get more quotes in (hopefully today or tomorrow), I'll update the thread.
