I have a BBQ pit that I had made about 20 years ago. The lid on it is very heavy but has been just fine until about a year ago and it is getting increasingly hard to open. I need to lubricate the hinges on the thing but I need to figure out what to use. I know that WD40 is not going to help because it will just evaporate. Wjhat is a good type of lubricant to use for that and how do I cox it down into the hinge?

do your hinges have zerk fittings? If so, no brainer there. If not, try soaking them in motor oil of some kind.

Make sure that when it gets hot the grease/oil doesn't drip onto your food.

OVR, your hinges/lid may warped from the heat over the last twenty years creating a bind. If the grease doesn't work, it may be time to replace and realign with new hinges.

Powdered graphite is about the only thing that i can think of that is readily available and won't be bothered with the heat from cooking. Molybdenum sulfide (powdered moly) would also work as well.

Wheel bearing grease works just fine.
