I was about to order the pocket door for our condo remodel when I had one of those "maybe I should google to confirm first" moments. Needless to say, I haven't been able to find a sound correct answer.

We are completely re-configuring our master bathroom including putting the toilet in its own closet. We are pretty tight on space, so we're trying to make the toilet closet as small as possible, including using a pocket door to avoid taking space for the door swing. I had planned on using a 24" door, mainly because the old door to the bathroom was 24" and the door to the other two bathrooms in the house are both 24". The main door to the bathroom will be 36". Most of the search results seem to suggest that as long as the main exit from the bathroom is 30"+, the width of the toilet closet door doesn't matter. However, I can't find an answer to my specific scenario. So, if anybody has the 2012 IRC handy or knows this portion of the code, I would greatly appreciate some feedback.

The job is permitted through the City of Houston, so I don't want to get all the way to my cover-up inspection and have them flag the toilet closet door as being too small. If it has to be larger than 24", we'll likely have to reconfigure the layout again...

You're correct. There is no minimum requirement. A min would only apply for an accessible water closet, which is never required in a private residence.

I think the minimum size for a water closet is 30 x 60, including space the toilet takes up. As far as keeping things clear I believe you can't have anything within 21" of the front of the toilet so you should be good.

The room as we currently have it laid out is like a rectangle with a triangle added on to the end. The main rectangle is 30" x 55" (30" toilet + 25" clear in front of toilet) and the triangle adds another 2-3' on one of the side walls. Would this meet the requirement since the total SF is greater than if the room was 30"x60" or does each leg of the wall have to be a minimum of 60" long?

And this is going to sound really stupid, but if you open the pocket door, you have 21" plus whatever dimension is clear beyond the door. Who's to say the door is for hiding the throne when not in use and you like dumping with the door open?

24" is a very common width for a water closet door.

I think you'll be fine. FWIW I've had two houses right around the minimum size (current one is 36x60) and never ran into any trouble with the room being too small. Both had a 24" door that opened into the WC.
