How long should you let your sod take root before fertilizing? I heard 6 weeks, but have also heard 3 months.

see if you can pick up the sod without resistance. once the roots have established you can fert at about half rate. I would hit the sod with Medina soil activator as soon as planted then every week for a month or so. I also would hit the new sod at about 2 weeks with
medina liquid lawn food.the medina products are excellent.

I've been told years ago to wait until I have mowed the new grass at least a couple of times before applying fertilizer so that's what I've always done have have had no problems!

I needed to fill a couple of holes with a few squares of sod recently. And I fertilized soon thereafter. Is it all going to die now?

4-6 weeks is the typical amount of time to wait for new sod. Just fertilize it with a slow release fertilizer like a 15-5-10 since it's still early in the spring. You can get it at any Home Depot/Lowe's.
