What is the best ivy to plant in my backyard that will grow in the Houston climate?
I would like for it to grow fast, tolerate the heat in Houston, and stay green all year. I plan on letting it grow and cover my fence.

Here you go. I've already put in some of the search filters for you.

We planted a crossvine, and that thing has tons of flowers and grows quick. I'm in the Austin area, so I can only imagine how fast it will grow in a more humid environment.

Thanks for the great suggestions.
I am looking into either crossvine, english ivy, or confederate jasmine

English ivy does well in North Texas. Not sure about your area, but you have to keep it under control. My wife planted some and then asked me to remove it about 5 years later. I dog cussed her in my head the whole day.

I read "fence" as "face" the first time. Made me chuckle.

Doug Welsh's Texas Garden Almanac recommends Carolina Jessamine as an evergreen vertical vine for the Houston region.

If you have neighbors please don't. My neighbors have ivy and if I don't trim it on my side every few months it starts taking over trees, bushes, everything. I let my backyard go 6 months and just filled 4 trash bags with all the ivy I cut down.

I got some mexican flame vine because I wanted something that flowered longer than the ubiquitous jasmine. It did die back pretty hard 2 winters ago but did fine this winter. It tends to grow top heavy so if you want something to cover a fence from top to bottom it wouldn't be a good choice. Just another option.

The old lady behind our place planted honeysuckle vines by the fenceat some point. It's horrible stuff; it grows on both sides and spread into the hedgerow between out place and the people to the right. I'm about to say f*k it and hit anything on my side with roundup. If the whole thing dies it's for everyone's benefit.

Our neighbor has Japanese Honeysuckle. I go to the bottom of the chain link fence and cut most of the vines at their base. It helps keep it thinned out and somewhat manageable.

If you plant an ivy/vine that is fast growing it will be fast growing on every thing it reaches. Be prepared to do lots of trimming once it gets established. English Ivy will take over.

It isn't an ivy, but kudzu should grow great in houston AND it establishes itself pretty quickly!!!
