Looking for some advice. I've got a tree that I tried transplanting but it doesn't look like it's going to make it. I'm trying to figure out what I should put in it's place. There's a tree growing on the other side of the fence so I don't want anything too large, maybe 8-10 ft. Can be ornamental. Maybe I need a shrub and tree it?

I'm kind of lost on what I should do, so naturally I'm turning to TexAgs.

I was going to recommend a crape myrtle but is that what's currently there. How much light does that area get. It looks kind of shaded

Regarding shade - that is the west side of the yard so it gets plenty of morning sun, but neighbors on all sides have lots of mature trees that will shade parts of my yard.

I don't think its a crape but I honestly don't know as the previous owner planted it right before we purchased and its never looked too healthy.

Has anyone had any experience with Bottlebrush?

looks like its a Southern Wax Myrtle, they tend to have issues w/ root rot and are short lived

Little Gem or Teddy Bear Magnolia
Possumhaw Holly (deciduous w/ bright red berries)
Various hollies like Nellie R. Stevens, Savannah, Foster, etc (can get tree form which allows you to plant underneath)

I think I'm going with a Little Gem Magnolia but having a hard time locating one in Houston. Any ideas? Would rather get a smaller one rather than spending $500 for a 30g at Big Tex.
