I remember reading on here that fall was the best time to transplant trees in Texas.

So my question is, where do you BUY trees in the fall (in B/CS)? Every place I've looked has tons of them in the spring, but almost nothing now.

The best time to plant trees is in Dec. - Jan. Go to nurseries at that time of year.

I wouldn't plant a tree until then. Their roots are dormant, and it gives them a chance when growth starts again to already be in the ground.

In B/CS, there is a full fledged tree farm out on Wellborn Road. It's a little hard to find. It's on the north side of the road. Google Maps shows the turn in is 5.3 miles south of Wellborn and Greens Prairie Trail intersection. It's 1.6 miles north of Wellborn and 159 intersection (Millican). Sorry I don't have a name or phone number. I have bought many trees from that location. They are outstanding and have good prices.

I think I've found it called Brazos Valley Tree Farm: (936) 870-3993

I've always planted trees in the fall (early Oct.) and never had any issues. You want the roots to be as established as possible to survive the first summer. Winter plantings will do that but I prefer the extra 2-3 months an early fall planting gives the roots to get established.

Thanks! I'm planning on giving them a call today. I'm looking to plant an Autumn Blaze Maple this month.

I would also check out chambersvilletreefarm.com or tree-land.com before I went with Fannin. Not particularly impressed with Fannin.

Also, Maples scorch easily in D/FW.

You might want to get a soil sample and make sure the plants were grown locally. The last red oak I had (found out it was grown in E texas) died as a result (my soil was very acidic).

I'm in Arlington. We just had to remove a 20 year old silver maple due to damage. Lost lots of big branches due to the tornado last year. We have a huge red oak in the front of our house.

Would the maple last in DFW as long as we watered generously? We also have a small Chinese pistachio tree that's doing really well but we were looking for something that will give great color and grow fast.

Sorry to threadjack

You might want to look at a Burr Oak or a Chinquapin Oak. Both great varieties, large leaves, grow pretty quickly. I went with a Chinquapin in my old back yard.. always forgot to water it, and it did fine.

Another threadjack. I am in the process of adding trees to our place. I planted 4 live oaks at the beginning of the year. One has come up with what I can only find is "wet wood" (I know, I know). Anyhow, anyone have experience with a live oak and wet wood? TIA
