Looking to build this outdoor sectional from these plans:
http://ana-white.com/2010/05/plans/simple-modern-outdoor-sectional-armless-section
http://ana-white.com/2010/05/plans/corner-and-ends-outdoor-sectional

However, I found this blog showing the plans converted to 2x4s instead of 1x4s for a much sturdier look:
http://www.the36thavenue.com/2012/04/diy-outdoor-sectional.html

I just can't quite get their modified measurements to add up though. Anyone care to take a look at them for me and see if they are accurate or not?

TIA

Seems to add up alright to me. Are you taking off half an inch from the 2 x 4 measurements correctly? They are relly 1.5" x 3.5" in dimension.

Remember to drill pilot holes for all of your screws. I see no need to use wood puddy to fill in the screw holes if you will be covering the bench with cushions.

Yeah, I wasnt taking into account the actual size of a 2x4. Thanks!

Ill be using a kreg jig for pocket holes that will be concealed.

Sent this to my wife, and I think we'll be doing this in time for football season for our patio. Gotta have that extra seating so all of friends can watch us try and run through the SEC again this year.

Laying out the pieces and drilling pocket holes with the kreg jig:

Three regular sections done, working on the three corner sections:

After a good day and half build here is the finished product (minus finish and cushions/pillows):

Nice looking work! Too bad no one can see it because it's buried under 100 pillows!

That looks awesome! Great work. Where did your wife get the cushions? I have a feeling I am going to be building this sooner than later.

Not yet. Looking at using a deck stain/paint.

What was the total cost of materials?

Wood and Screws: About $150
Pillows: A whopping $400

Still cheaper than buying an outdoor sectional this large.

That's pretty cool. I'd like to do something like this, but holy crap pillows and cushions are expensive.. Where did you find yours?

What's the deal with women and pillows?

It seems like any place that is designated as a comfortable place to sleep or sit needs to have a pillow thrown on there which has to be thrown on ground or stacked up in order to actually sit or lay down.

Maybe that's only at my house.

This seems crazy cheap. I could adjust the dimensions accordingly and make it work.

If you're having cushion problems
I feel bad for you son.

But a bench ain't one.

So I've been planning on undertaking this project for the last couple of weeks since you originally posted it. The girlfriend has started looking at cushions and I've had three wanders through the lumber yard debating wood selection.

I'm not 100% sold that I want to use 2x4s instead of 1x4s. What kind of 2x4s did you use?
