How long do you want to ignore this user?
I closed on a new construction home in San Antonio in July of last year and I have a couple questions about what I need to do this spring to make sure my lawn bounces back well after the winter. First of all I have a Celebration Bermuda lawn (and yes, I have the Bermuda Bible).

1. At what time should I apply pre emergent herbicide?
2. Can you recommend a pre emergent that I should use? I would like to buy something that I can get locally.

I use Barricade. You probably won't find it at Lowes's or HD, but every garden center in Houston carries it along with the Nitro Phos fertilizer.

Is this a good week to chunk out some pre emergent in dfw? I put out a round in mid October I think.

Apply your pre-emerge the 3rd or 4th week in Febuary along with a slow release Nitrogen fertilizer (~1lb/1000 sq.ft.). Barricade, Pendimethlin, and Dimension are all good pre-emergents.

Is this directed to me (in San Antonio) or the poster above from DFW?

In the S.A. area, apply around the last of Feb. Go to Neil Sperry's site and all of your questions will be answered. Stay far away from Randy Lemmon's unless you have a lot of money, he only pimps for those who what to charge twice the price. Barricade, Pendimethlin, and Dimension can all be bought at Home Depot and Lowes. However, to gain complete control they will have to be applied in Late Feb. and around late April. Read Neil Sperry's website and you cannot go wrong and you will save a ton of money.

There is no hard and fast rule about when to preemerge in the Dallas area. Way too many variables - weather, what weeds bother you the most, and what product you use.
The end of Feb and the first part of March is the general timing. The preemergents mentioned here -really all that are available - all have limitations and things they do better than others.
For instance, Barricade products take about 30 days to form a barrier to prevent weeds, but it lasts longer. Dimension is my choice in the spring because it has both pre and limited post emergent activity on crabgrass. I also feel like Dimension gives better control on Aster.
The only weed you are really going to control with spring preemergents in Dallas is crabgrass. Most other weeds you see in the spring are late germinating winter annuals - dandelion, poa annua, rescue grass, etc that a spring preemergents won't stop.
In my opinion, applying any Nitrogen before the end of April is a waste of money. Soil temps are just too low - most years- for Bermuda to be growing. No need to fert until your yard is completely green and you are having to mow.
A pretty simple , effective, and readily available preemergent program for Dallas would be to go to HD and buy Lesco 0-0-7 w/PreM and apply it March 1, May 1, Sept 1, and Jan 1. Substitue a Dimension product Mar 1 and a Barricade product on Sept 1 if you can find them. You will control 90% of all your weeds this way.
Fertilize around this program because it doesn't give you any Nitrogen.
