Never paid the labor to finish our slate in my bathroom and patio. After a few rains I have considered it. It just looks better to me. How many coats of sealer would you need to get a glossy look? Any specific brands you might be aware of?

You can get glossy sealer. It usually takes a couple of coats. I bought some at Home Depot a couple years ago.

We had slate in our master shower. It was never sealed (or not sealed correctly) and it had water stains and started flaking. We ended up replacing it.
You can buy sealer at Lowes that was recommended to us by a tile company. You can pick your level of gloss with the sealer.
You have to seal Slate once a year.
