Wife & I moved to Fairfield (Far NW Houston) back in April. We have a huge lot and are considering whether we want to add a pool in the backyard. Hoping there are some people on texags that can provide some advise...

1) What can we expect to spend? I realize this is likely a big range just trying to get an idea.
2) What are the additional costs (cleaning, maintenance, utilities, etc...) that come with owning a pool?
3)Who would you recommend for installation/design and why?
4) For those that have gone through this process, what words of wisdom can you bestow on us?

I don't know much about pools, but from talking to my neighbors on both sides in west Houston (south of 10, west of 8) who have pools, be very sure that you want an in-ground pool with the soil conditions in this area... mainly how much the clay shifts as average soil moisture changes. The neighbor on the back side of our rental has had to have the pool emptied and parts of it jackhammered to replace pipes that cracked at least twice this summer. And it's a self perpetuating problem; one leak begets another because the clay gets wet and expands when a leak's present and shrinks after it goes away. It seems that one neighbor or the other has someone out there breaking up portions of the pool or pool surround every week. And I should know; I work from home and get to listen to the jackhammers.

If it were me, I'd find a way to put in an above ground pool and get creative with the deck and landscaping around it. Our next house will probably be bought with that in mind.

Check your insurance too. I think your homeowner's policy will take a hit.

My only other piece of advice is build a pool with parallel walls on the longest dimension. That way there is a tiny potential you can use the pool for fitness. Kidney shaped pools are simply stupid in my opinion.

What can you afford, that is the question. Just finished a pool (filled June 30th), we started planning and visiting with builders back in February. We had offers and different designs from $43K to $95K but we ended up with one that cost about $70. Be careful of "national builders" they tend to be pushy when they sell their designs and want you to come to their show rooms immediatley to start picking out tile, decking, coping, etc. After 3 visits with these types we started talking to independent builders who do more custom rather than cookie cutter pools. I ended up using a company that actually is officed in our community so I know he is solid (started in 1986) and is right around the corner if I ever actually need to track them down.
As far as unforseen expenses, yes there are always some of those...mine were, main electrical re-route through my back yard ($2000), gas meter upgrade (for spa heater)$350, irrigation system reroute make operational again $500, all the new plants and patio furniture your wife will want to buy when it is all done $4000+!!!
Words of experience (not wisdom), be patient!
I would be weary of folks that said they can build your pool in 4 weeks or less. As frustrating and as much as you want to have it ready, well built pools are not thrown together. They take time to be done right, ground needs to settle, rebar needs to be done correctly, plumbing done with right size pipe (with no or very few 90degree angles and no stacking of pipe in trenches...this is in case there is a problem later, you don't have to dig up the whole slew of lines to get to one).
Don't let them bunch up your pumps, filter and heater on a small pad, good start is minimum 3'x 10' pad, easier to work on and replace pieces later. As far as design goes, do what you like...a good graphic designer that works in house with a pool company will redo your pool as many times as you want till they get it the way you want it...if they tell you they will only do it 1 or 2 times, go find someone else!!
I can't tell you what it will cost going forward but besides a little more on my electricity bill, chlorine tabs and acid at $20/case I don't see it being very expensive once I get the water balanced and can start adding salt to keep pool balanced. I am assuming only about $600-$1000 annually.
One more thing, it took us 8 weeks exactly from first day of dig until filled pool, only 2 rain days, so that was the frustrating part but looking back thats less than 60 days to do something that we will enjoy for many years to come. If you want our pool builders name send me a PM and I will get you their name and number. Good luck!

I know, rule #1!
Well if I was a computer wiz like most of you I would get'em up but bear with me and when I'm not working I will try to get that done.
That said, I guess I should finish by saying that the price also included a tear down of an existing house to garage covered walkway and about 300 sq. ft of concrete patio. It was replaced with a magnificent 550+ sq.ft 12' ceiling patio that was a very complicated structure due to existing roof lines and angles of my house. I say it was difficult because 2 contractors walked away from the "bid" process stating that they were not confident they could build the structure to my specifications. I am as happy and pleased with my new patio as I am with the pool. The price also includes right at 1000 sq. ft. of travertine decking and a 10 ton waterfall with a 23 foot weeping wall and beach entry into the pool.....and an 8'spa with arm ledge.

sasappis, my house would sell for around $300 - 320K in todays market.

Hope to get pictures up soon.

We bought a house with a pool last year and the previous owners used slate for the patio surface. It chips and it gets REALLY HOT! How hot do your pavers get? Are there any hardscape surfaces that are cooler than others in our (Houston) wretched summers?

Also, anyone ever added a bathroom off/in their garage for pool convenience? Our half bath is at the front of the house so you have to walk across our wood floors to use it and there are always water spots.

We are completely satisfied with the travertine we put down, it is awesome and finished off the pool/patio better than I could have ever expected. We were actually supposed to use flagstone coping and paver tiles for deck but because of some shortage of flagstone and another issue we got this travertine for a deal and I am so glad we did.
To answer your question, NO it doesn't get hot, even in 100+ degree days I can stand barefoot on it and not have to move my feet!
We still have to stain it next month to give it a full time wet look and make the colors pop.
Couple more shots...

Here is a look up under the new patio, only thing missing is my 47" flat screen, hope to get that in a week or two.

Travertine? KACHING! Good to know it doesn't get hot. The slate gets so hot that our dog can't walk on it.
