I have an area of my backyard that I'd getting poor coverage. It is between two rotar sprinkler heads. Can you add a pop up head between the big rotary heads?

Short answer- yes. Proper answer- No, for a couple reasons. The rotors require longer run times than sprays to properly cover an area. Mixing rotors and sprays results in an area either receiving too much or too little water. Are you sure the rotors can't be adjusted to water properly?

that makes sense.

Well I never thought of looking at that. Just turn them on to see how it covers it and then adjusting as needed? Seems simple enough if it can fix it. The problem is...this are is within 7 feet of the two nearest rotors and most of the water from both of them shoot over this spot.

I recently installed a system so I'm no expert, but I ran into a similar issue.`I resolved it with two adjustments.
1. was caused by wife messing around when she should have been making sammiches. She was trying to turn them off and cranked down a little knob on the valve, and it took me a while to discover. That reduced flow but created more of a stream effect than spray diffusing over the area, once opened back up the spray pattern was restored.
2. There is a screw directly in front of the hole where the water comes out on the sprinkler head. If you screw it down it interupts the flow and diffuses the spray even more.

Check that the flow adjustment is open for full flow (I guess if you have multiple zones operating at once it could also create lower than recommended flow thus affecting spray pattern).
Then try the spray adjustment screw to diffuse the spray further and that should get better coverage over your 'dead spot'.

Hope that helps you.

Also, figure out what brand heads/valves you have and google them for operating instructions. There will likely be a manual online you can search for troubleshooting.

irrigation heads are designed for "head to head" coverage. If you are standing at one rotor make sure another rotor that may be 25-40' away (either sqaure or triangulated spacing) is hitting hitting you. As stated previously make sure the radius adjustment is correct. Some rotor zones need to run 30-45mins while pop ups need anywhere from 12-20mins

Couldn't you replace the rotors with new rotors that can provide great distance in coverage?
