Really would like to mount my 46" above the fireplace - I'm moving into a townhome and the living room has an awkward layout. I've never done it before, so looking for some opinions. TIA.

I don't know the exact measurements, but the mantle is probably about 5' tall, so the bottom of the TV could be a few inches above that point. We will probably put the main seating couch about 12' away.

Do you think the TV would be too tall? I should be able to angle the TV down 10 degrees or so as well.

I dont think that 5.5' is too high as long as you buy the mount that angles down, like you said you would. I have a 46' LCD hung above our mantle at about the same height but our living room is above 18' deep. It may look a bit akward to anyone standing up and watching. Designers really need to do a better job thinking about tv locations when planning the living rooms layouts. Almost every home we looked at had a recessed tv nitch in an awkward corner of the room.

I have a 40" mounted above fireplace about the exact height you're looking at and it's just right IMO. However I have the full motion mount so I can angle to the side also, because this is in the master bedroom and the fireplace is in the corner. But again I think the what you're considering would work well.

Before I mounted mine I made a cardboard rectangle the size of the TV so i could set in place and sit around the room to see how it would feel to look at from various angles. It might help you out before you start mounting the TV. And you most definitely should get a tilt and swivel type mount. I think I got mine for under $50 from monoprice.com

I have the exact setup with a 46".

I got this mount from monoprice and it works perfect

Also got all of my cables from monoprice to run from the tv thru the wall to my components

Good idea on getting an outline of the size up there like a piece of cardboard.

I love monoprice and wouldn't get my mount anywhere else

Thanks for the suggestions.

We have a 55" Samsung that sits on top of our fireplace in our townhouse. We drilled a two holes to run the wires behind the tv down to the inputs. It looks high but have gotten used to it for six months...Great set-up!
