Whose idea was these barking niches?! They take about two to four hours each to tile.

I have extremely expensive taste.

Shower is done, tentatively. We had to chip up most of the bathroom floor and repour concrete. What a day...

EDIT: shower FLOOR is tentatively done

Why did you have to chip-up the floor? Spacing? In any fashion, it looks GREAT!!! Mine's next!!!

It was the floor of the *bathroom* that we had to chip up -- where we'd poured the self leveling cement. One of the bags of SLC failed to bond to the cement.

I added it up, and there are ~ 60 hours of labor into that shower since we started hanging the prova.

Looks good.

I feel your pain on the niches - if I could do it all over again, I would build a rig that surrounds the tile saw with a plastic tent and a collection system for the errant water, and just set it up right outside the bathroom.

Ryan - most of the trouble with the niche was that it wasn't completely level or quite lined up with the wall tiles. Part of it was a planning fail, but most of the problems we couldn't have really predicted. It was a good lesson though. Next time we'll get a prefab niche, install it level and go from there.

Progress! I'm attempting some simple-to-complicated tiling features around the curb.

Nothing is really cleaned much yet, but here's the inside of the curb:

Bottom of the edge of the curb and wall along the floor. The thin piece could never get set quite right, but meh. I'm a beginner and unsupervised!

Front of the curb is done:

Now to get it cleaned up!

More!

Got the other side of the bottom done. This one came out a little better:

Put a skim coat on the top of the curb in hopes of leveling it out for tile:

The student has become the teacher! Had to do a few fancy cuts tonight but I knocked out one of the sides down in the shower pan. Here is my first multi-cut tile ever:

Installed:

The bottom left completed:

Some of the cut bullnose pieces for the top of the curb. The grout lines should line up from the front to the top and to the back. They're just laid out for now. They'll go in this weekend:

It's going to be like living in a brand new house when you finally have the use of that bathroom back!

AgDrumma....

Just curious...

You are doing a great job and I admire you for doing it alone but...wondering what your total investment is so far in this project? $$$

DIY is fun and usually saves money but wonder how much $ you think you saved doing it solo?
AgDrumma07

Hey Sea, I've only done rough numbers so far. I'm waiting until we're completely done so I can calculate accurately. However, ballpark, I've saved at least $2-3k. Most of that was on tiling. If I had done the plumbing myself, I'd be pushing $4k. The drywall was a no-brainer...it was worth $400 for me not to DIY it. For the next plumbing project, I'd probably buy the tools and DIY it.

I could've easily hired out the tiling, but I don't think I would've gotten the quality results I required.

EDIT: I've invested around $4-5k for everything. Just an estimate right now...

Then, you are definately saving a pretty good bit, I would venture.

Do you have a wife? Mine would lose patience with it REALLY fast. We're paying to have ours done and she is like, "What? It will take two weeks!?!"
AgDrumma07
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Nope, no wife. Nothing in the plans for that. I enjoy freedom too much.

You need more/better cousins. Like the one who has the tile saw in the trunk of an Impala next to the batteries for the hydraulics

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah, Jane Fonda doesn't keep a tile saw in the back of HER Honda.

My shower don't want none unless you got a tile saw hon.

My tile saw brings all the home improvement board guys to the yard.

Does Glen Campbell do tile?

Like a tile and stone trowel boy
Tiling out every course, spilling grout on the niche below

Showin' off all my work, to people I don't even know.

Just trying to juggle schedules to install the bathroom floor tile. Then we'll build a vanity. I guess I could get off my ass and paint!
superspeck
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yep. Trying to get schedules in sync. I'm gonna be in Miami for most of May, so we have the 21st, 28th, and 5th to finish things up ...
AgDrumma07
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm free the 21st and 5th. If it takes longer than that to tile, well...let's not go there.

So you still bathing in a metal tub in the yard, or did I miss the finished product?
