Anyone ever had to change from a 3 prong cord to a 4 prong cord on a dryer?

Moved into a new home and it has a 4 prong outlet... my dryer has a 3 prong.

I see a lot of directions online and it looks pretty straightforward.... I just haven't ever done such a task before.

Wondering if it's difficult/confusing... or any tips?

Thanks

Step 1: Buy new cord
Step 2: Unscrew old cord
Step 3: Screw in new cord
Step 4: Drink a beer and act like you just accomplished something
Step 5: Repeat Step 4 until satisfied

Lol I'm just hoping it's not difficult because I was reading some posts online about people wiping out the power in their entire apartment building lol

I can definitely see myself doing something stupid like that

I had to do it when I bought my new place. It took more time to go to Home Depot and come back home than it did to install.

How about doing the same procedure for an old Lincoln stick welder?

I just did this very thing yesterday on my dryer, and I have to agree that the hardest part was getting that stupid dryer vent back on. There's just not an easy way to do it.

I had to do this a few weeks ago. but i went the opposite route. I changed the receptacle to a 3 prong receptacle. It was a cheaper alternative to accomplish the same thing.

macaggie, what did you do with the unused wire that was already at the previous (4-prong) receptacle? What color was it?

Yeah, that's not a good idea. Extra wire aside (which should be a ground wire), your house is now out of code (assuming it was built after 1996, when four-wire receptacles started being required).

It's not worth saving $5 now to have this hassle when you sell your house. Not to mention reducing your electrical safety.

I grounded it. But What was I supposed to do with the fourth wire on the wire had I gone the other route? There were only three wires on the dryer.
