Looking to finally buy a set of clubs. Know i do not want steel shaft and i heavily favor my mid irons for most of the heavy lifting between the tee box and green. Looking for a base set for 6' in height and possibly an upgraded 1 wood. Am in the Katy area so we have most major stores that would carry clubs to pick from.

Thanks for any help.

Why not steel, just curious?

Would you consider slightly pre-owned? Lots of great deals with these sets IMO.

Have you tried to hit anything at the store or during a fitting?

The first set is easy to get because its not going to be perfect anyways.

A standard length shaft or +0.25 would work for your depending on your arm length.

I would go with something like:

This

Driver

5 Wood

4 Hybrid

6 - PW

54 and 58 Wedge

Putter

I would go find a used Ping G425 iron set with a steel shaft (95 - 105 grams).

Good luck!

What's your budget? I play Sub70s and I really like them. May be good to get fitted. I go to Worleys Golf Shop in Spring. He's a former college player and prioritizes getting people into the right clubs over making a sale.
Give me the guy who shoots for excellence and fails over the guy who shoots for mediocrity and succeeds.

Used steel as a kid and with rental clubs the last few times i have played, just hate the feel swinging them. I would be open to a used set in decent condition.

As for budget, nothing hard set but would like to keep it around 500-700 maby on the top end? Hard to tell what that actually gets these days. These would just be fun casual play during the year.

Honestly hit up goodwill. They will have full sets at least for a good price.

Also garage sales and flea markets are options.

You can't try them out like you can at the golf stores but you'll stay in your budget

You can build out some Maltby sets pretty cheap on their GolfWorks website.

https://www.golfworks.com/maltby-sti2-gen-2-custom-irons/p/cma0368/.

These start at $29 a head, pick shaft, grip, length, lie adjustments can probably keep it under $600 easily. Never played them but hear good things on them.

I got fitted for new clubs earlier this year, but if you are OK with pre-owned, my previous game-improvement set could be a great fit. Until recently, I played only a few times a year, so these are in great shape. I've kept them as backups for buddies coming in from out of town, but I'm willing to sell them if you're interested. You would just need to add a putter. I'm in the College Station area. Feel free to DM me.

How old are you?

Haven't heard it called a 1 wood since the 80s.

Starter as in, you haven't played much?

Here's what I would get if I were you:

-- Ping Eye 2, i3, or i5 set, complete or not; you only need the 5-PW, or even just 5-9

-- 2 Vokey (Titleist) Wedges -- 52 and 56; hit some at a golf store to see what finish you like the feel of the best; get a 46-48 if you don't get a set with a PW

-- those older Pings have weaker lofts than current sets so I'd get the following fairway and/or rescue/hybrid clubs: 17-18 degree, 20-22 degree, and 25-27 degree.

That and a putter is all you need. You don't need a driver, or even a stronger fairway wood, right now.

I agree with the above poster. I wouldn't worry about graphite shafts on irons. My first set were knockoffs with graphite shafts and I switched out of them within 3 months.
