I am a member. Tomball has a come a long way in maintenance these days. Getting all the irrigation system fixed and a new pump was just recently installed. Over the years the course has gotten more play but still no tee times are needed to play. There is some RAC games played so if you avoid that time you're good. If you have a specific question I can try and answer

How are the fairways and greens usually?

They are generally in decent shape, I can think of three holes that the struggle to keep about 5-10% of a green in good shape. They are maintained a little longer so they are traditionally rolling slow. Fairways have a good stand of cover but they are hard pan underneath so if you take divots it's gonna hurt. The rough is a mixed bag of grass and mowing so it can at times be easy or tough to play out of with consistency .

For the cost I think you get what you pay for and is a fun tract to play. Golf pro cares and has improved the course a lot in terms of course maintenance, but course still has a long ways to go to.

If you want a fun, laid back and good course to learn on or take youth then it's a good place.

Hope that helps.

Is there an official superintendent or is it a lot of volunteer work? Would it be comparable to say like Windrose?
Give me the guy who shoots for excellence and fails over the guy who shoots for mediocrity and succeeds.

Yes, there is a full time superintendent and grounds crew. TCC is a member owned equity club with a full staff. They have aerated all the fairways each spring the last 3 years which has made a significant difference. Greens are always in good shape. Good tournament culture, lot of fun, and between the big tourneys, MGA events, and daily RAC, always some good competition for whatever you are looking for. The summer Thursday night scramble series is a member favorite and always loads of fun. I've played the scramble series the last 3 summers and intentionally have the pro put me on a different team every week, met a ton of people and can honestly say every one I've played with has been cool and all fun to play with.

Sounds a lot like my club, Hearthstone. Love it.

Every club has its shortcomings, it's the people who make it worth it.

The above I would all agree with.

If you were out recently the conditions would be as bad as you might see them. Specifically the fairways. We've gotten no meaningful rain in atleast a month and another dry summer on the whole. There are ponds dried up that rarely do. The irrigation is inadequate but realize how old some of it is and with no rain this is what it looks like. They're taking better care mentioned above with aerating, new pump, etc. The irrigation overhaul is on the ballot up for vote soon.

The staff is great. Beer is affordable. It plays a little harder than the slope/rating and distance would suggest by just looking at the card. Some of the blue boxes are currently up so maybe not as much from there right now. The greens are small and fairways/ some tee shots are tight. Around the greens can be tricky between the rough conditions and the elevation of the greens. As mentioned they are slow but it would be tough to hold greens otherwise. It's a great course to walk too. Its worth taking a flyer on for atleast a year. If you play regularly it's one of the best values in town.

I for sure want to play it once before I join. I'm assuming they allow that

Yes, call the head pro Jeff Rutherford and let him know you are interested in joining and would like to play the course, that's what I did before I joined.
