Played Quintero on Saturday. Wow, what a course.

First, this course is out in the boonies. It is not in Scottsdale. It is 45-60 minutes drive. The freeway system in the general phoenix area is poor. You will end up going long stretches of city lights no matter where you are. Make sure you have a rental car because you aren't getting an uber for your ride home. You might get there, but you aren't getting a ride share back.

Once you get there, it is striking how desolate it is out there. There are a few homes on the course, but not many and I didn't see anyone at the homes. Maybe all vrbo's?? The clubhouse and restaurant bar were very lacking. They were fancy job trailers. I didn't ask if they were planning on building real stuff at some point, but they kind of have to to be a real destination. We paid $250 each for our round, out of state. Tried for in state, but they wanted to see my Arizona drivers license, which doesn't exist. They were cool about it.

From there you drive to the practice area and first tee. It is a long way from the clubhouse and the carts are governed down a bunch. The practice area was nice. We didn't have enough time to really get loose, but whatever. The starter calls your name and then moves you to the first tee and gives you a five minute speech.

The course was in amazing condition. Fairways were beautiful and the greens were really nice. The greens were fast. Lots of people forget to fix their dimples on the green. Kinda disappointing. Golf is supposed to be a gentlemans game and I would expect gentlemen to fix their damage on such a nice course. Oh well.

The not so nice - it was cart path only. They said it was too recent off their overseeding. Ok, no problem. I'm not a big fatty. Well, it ended up being 100 degrees and every shot I hit seemed to be on the other side of the fairway and walking to or from the buggy was always uphill one way. This flatland boy doesn't go uphill too much. By 14 I was getting tired. Evidently they called my buddy a couple weeks ago to warn him, so good on them for that. The rough was deep. It was some sort of rye and it would grab the clubface and twist it. I was not experienced in this and it ate me up. The greens got faster as the day went. By the end they were lightning fast. Faster than I have played in a long time. I putted well, but it still was too much difference from the muni greens I play. Last gripe was the beverage service. They were charging $9 a beer. Wtf?! I understand paying a premium, but was not ok with titty bar pricing. They were also kinda chinchy with the ice for the cooler on the cart. There is also a gun range nearby, so you hear gunshots a lot. It is far enough away so it doesn't bother you, just not nature sounds all the time.

I didn't play very well. I hit some great shots and a bunch of bad ones. Had a great time. Beautiful course. I cannot stress that enough. Several holes with big elevation changes. Some easy holes, some really tough ones. Next time I go back to the area I will probably pick a different course, not because it wasn't awesome, just that there are so many good ones there. It you are going to the area, put this on your short list.

Played there my last trip to Phoenix. Pretty much agree with your post. Way out in the middle of nowhere. A couple of squirrely holes, but overall a very nice experience. Staff was really friendly. My group all agreed we would consider playing there again. I have one photo here like yours. I'll bet this is the most photographed part of the course.

Love Quintero. Not sure if golf or something else was the reason for your trip but as you found out October isn't the best time to come here because of the overseed. I attached the schedule below.

Bad break on the weather. It's stayed at or above 100 most of October. Forecast high tomorrow is 71. When Quintero is back on the fairways it's going to cost more than $250.

I disagree with you about Phoenix freeways though. They're everywhere, never much traffic and there aren't any till roads. Having moved here from Houston that's one of my favorite things.

Apple maps must have been messing with me then.

If you brought a half decent ball retriever to that course, you could probably get enough quality balls for half a year. The marshalls speech before the first tee was mainly a long warning about snakes so nobody really went looking.
Forgot to mention in my op that it was an over 5 hour round. Was on track to go over 6, but a marshall finally showed up and got things sped up. Last 4 holes were at a great pace. And, the carts have the geo fencing feature where they won't let you off the cart path. Annoying when trying to let carts pass. Get one tire off and it is beeping and shutting down.

The Q is an absolute gem. I miss not having Wickenburg ranch available to the public anymore. And it is the closest thing I could find to it.
Im looking for Ray Finkle.... and a clean pair of shorts. Im just a very big Finkle fan. This is my Graceland, sir.

Hwy 74 past the lake is the only way to get there so you're right. It's out there. I was talking about the freeways in town. To me the best golf is not in Scottsdale.

Not to derail this thread but this feature has to stop.

It slows things down incredibly and pisses me off to no end.

At least put ropes or markers down and shut them off if the driver ignores those warnings, but when they start shutting down when you get just off the path or approach a feature it's ridiculous.

Good in theory awful in practice.

I don't know. Wickenburg seemed like a much wider course to me than Quintero. More room from fairway edge to fairway edge it seemed to me. Here's one pic I still have from there.

My point was more directed at the seclusion of the course from the big city and its elevation changes

Quintero is not for weak, especially on a windy day.

We played Wickenburg not long after it had reopened after being closed for awhile. They were looking for business. We paid $110 green fee and got a WR-logoed Travis Mathews shirt and Travis Matthew's quarter-zip when we checked in.

Which is why, depending who is out there handicap wise, it can make for long rounds.

We played Quintero last March. It was my favorite course we played, next to Grayhawk. My only gripe is that my 17-year-old son didn't play great and he wanted to go back to the range and hit a few balls. The range attendant came up to him and me and said he couldn't hit balls after the round for some reason. After spending $300 each on green fees (or whatever it was), it pissed me off.

While Quintero is a great course, I think We Ko Pa is much better.

We Ko Pa Saguaro is great. Cholla is meh to me

Played both twice and Saguaro was much more lush both times

Q is such a beat down it has lost some of its shine with me. Will still go to Q but WeKoPa is such a good balance.

I was at We-Ko-Pa today placing a few wagers and had lunch at the grill at the golf course. It looks amazing right now.

Gotta be somewhere.

I was told today by someone that should know they're looking at building a 3rd course.

Hmm dunno what to think about that. I feel like they don't put enough resources into Cholla as it is

I think Cholla suffers by comparison to an extent. If it were stand alone and not sharing the property with Saguaro it would be more highly regarded. I live on this side of the valley so I'm partial to the terrain and views out this way though.

This. I preferred Cholla, although it really is splitting hairs. I can see how the blind shots can get old, and annoying for some, but coming from TX and playing it, it is welcoming and something different.

I enjoy Cholla..... but it is incredibly obvious We Ko Pa spends far more time in maintenance on Saguaro

LOVE We Ko Pa!

It's much more plain, but I also like Camelback.

Anyone played the course at Talking Stick?

I've played the Crenshaw course at Talking Stick and it bored me to tears. It was free, so I couldn't complain, but there's got to be better out there.

Friends and I are going there tomorrow. We're all on social security so our abilities and expectations are very low. If I were a golf tourist it wouldn't be in the rotation. Having said that it's nice but the related expenses of golf travel put it way down the list.

One of my buddies is covering it with casino credit. If I were paying I'd stay home.
