Decided to commit to working on my swing this winter.

Really bad about opening chest too soon and getting super steep. Also early extending. Bought a mat and net a couple weeks ago.

Every night I go out and will do 4 slow exaggerated swings and hit 1 ball, until I get to 100 swings combined.

Super frustrating at first… I could not stop ripping chest open to save my life. Finally starting to see a glimmer of hope after last night.

Just wanted to share, as I was beginning to think I'd never be able to shallow the club out.

Hard to tell from this angle but I would bet your weight shift to the back leg (left in your case) is potentially giving you some issues. This can lead to many problems. A teaching pro with pressure plates can show you exactly how much you are shifting. I would be 98% of amateurs have issues with this.

Early extension can be caused by a lazy lower body movement…not necessarily the inability to hold that right angle with the club shaft. A proper quick lower body movement will make an early extension almost impossible, like a whip affect. Fixing this - best done with a teaching pro.

I'm not worried about holding the angle as much as I am trying to not rotate my pelvis towards the ball… that causes me to run out of room at the bottom. Look at the gap between my legs in the steep swing vs the one where it's on better plane… I feel like the second swing I'm rotating trail hip more down the line vs out to the ball.

Also here's a swing from face on. That's from today

Yeah, I saw that…I've been told by a very reputable coach that you want your back leg kneecap to go directly to the back of your front leg knee during the downswing….didnt want to get too crazy describing that, hence the 'go see a coach' recommendation.

It's been 10 days… these things take time. I've got almost a decade of bad habits to undo

In my experience, what you fix on the range gets unfixed right back to your old ways on the course.

It's a futile attempt.

I don't believe a mortal is able to fix these things... unless you do what Nick Faldo did. Hit 1000 balls a day for a year with 6 iron.. I dont now, I thought that's what he did to learn the dog wags the tail swing.

3 months in. Have been working on plane and using ground better/fixing EE. Went from hitting my 8 iron 135-140 to hitting it 150-155

Try keeping your left heel down a little longer.

I'm trying but it's hard. Have been hitting balls w lob wedge under heel focusing on not letting club fall before I hit ball.

Maybe it's because you're a lefty, but I see some Greg Chalmers in your swing (follow-thru, mainly).

One thing I would adjust if it was my swing….during the backswing, at the moment the shaft is at parallel, it should be straight back in line with your foot line. I would say you pointing too far to the left per the camera view - this can lead to a less than ideal position at the top and more of a cut shot, potentially a slice.

You see pros refining this often - JT checks it in every pre shot.

Edit to add: lower body looks much better than three months ago!

What is your objective with whatever you're working on?? What is wrong with your current swing? And what is your expectation with your new swing?

I was very inconsistent, especially my low point. Path was way OTT, was having to make compensations to keep from hitting a huge pull. Also very little power

Objective is to build a repeatable swing. With the text you referenced the sole objective is to keep my trail heel on that wedge until club has contacted ball. (Not EE so bad)

Overall I've been working on fixing my plane/path (holding back to target longer, swinging with alignment rod to train plane) and fixing the early extension (hitting balls with wedge under foot, doing slo mo swings to ingrain feel)

ETA: I'm not looking to become a sub scratch golfer; mainly trying to just make the game more enjoyable for myself and improve in the areas that were glaring

Reading this is now going to make me start overthinking my swing again.

What do you think?

What should both of your arms look like at this point in the swing?

Don't.

Just put a good tempo on the swing and be in balance.

I think trail arm should be straighter by then. You brought it up though, what do you think?

There is a point in a swing after the impact when both arms are fully extended. I'm not sure you achieve that.

I agree. That video is 3 months old though.

Your left elbow needs to be in front of you, not behind you and you need to get deeper in your turn away from the ball. And always practice with the shoes you play in that half inch to 3/4 of an inch makes a huge difference.

That's about all my brain can handle when I address the ball.
