Acceptable only during a scramble.

I'll try to resurrect this thread with a related question: When is it acceptable (or not) to hit your driver with a low spin ball, then trade it out for a high spin ball?

My gut feeling, if someone I was playing with did it, would be that I don't care so long as they're in the fairway, and there's nothing at stake. ($$, competitive title, etc..)
I don't understand breaking the rules to shoot a better score. What's the point of even keeping score. I will change the ball on the green if mines muddy. But it's more for pace of play and because I always forget to bring a towel to the green.

Why keep score then?

Rules are that you can change balls between holes. During a hole, you can change if it's damaged or when taking relief (even free relief).

That said, like the above poster, I'll swap on the green if the ball is so muddy that I can't get it reasonably clean timely. Not gonna bog down play over something stupid

How long does it take to spit on that thing and wipe it down?

I've never had a ball muddy enough on the green that I can't get it clean with just spit and a thumb let alone a towel in 0 time.

It's a bs excuse to change the ball out for something softer or with an alignment line.

Sure it's a crap rule, but it's there, and any money or especially a competition I'd call it.

Wear a terry cloth wrist band on your ungloved hand. Problem solved; it just takes a few seconds to scrub off your ball or clubface and you don't have to carry anything extra. Also keeps sweat from running down into your hand.

Speaking for myself, most of my golf is early dewsweeper golf (freshly watered greens) and my ball flight is pretty high. I can make some pretty gnarly pitchmarks, especially on shots that land in a low spot or runoff funnel. I only play one style ball, so other than clean, no difference. I keep a towel hanging off my back belt so can handle it most of the time, but there's occasionally the thick mud that's also a bit dry that takes a wet towel or ballwasher to get clean. In some cases it's mud that accumulated while playing the hole, prior to reaching the green

Look man, you do you, but I've never seen a ball muddy enough where a towel and some spit won't clear it.

It honestly just isn't an excuse. Look friendly game just messing around, who gives a ****.

Big ass difference between using a clean ball on the green and swapping between a different spin ball for drives/approaches

I don't see the difference in switching from one range ball to the other. They're always the same yellowish color and usually the same brand.

Do you like firmer or softer? Higher flight or lower flight? Higher swing speed or lower?
Ok, I am interested in what your recommendations are with the following answers- softer, lower, higher swing speed.

Thanks

AVX for soft and lower flight

Higher swing speed changes it a bit as most people in the high swing speed group prefer firmer. I'm higher then average (but not in the "high" group) and enjoy this ball as I have a high spinny ball flight and this one stays a bit lower and doesnt spin off to the side as much as the others ive tried.

If you want firm the left dash is good low spin ball but has a high flight.
