appears they'll be walking a fine line between challenging and losing the greens ala Shinnecock. should be interesting as the week goes on.

That is freaking ridiculous. Looks like USGA is working hard to become the story instead of the competitors.

Imagine a ball with some backspin.

Agreed. Hard but fair should be their goal. A shot that would land like that doesn't deserve that fate. It wasn't risky, it was on the green, pin-high. It's laziness.

Create risk-reward, penalize risks that end in bad shots, punish any bad shots, but reward great shots. Don't only reward perfect shots but punish everything else.

We see videos like this every US Open week. And most difficult courses have greens that have false fronts/edges. You could do this little video in a lot of spots on Augusta greens and get similar results.

From what I've seen, the greens are set up for players to have to hit the right spots in order to be rewarded.

Of course if they get too close to the edge they risk losing them but let's wait and see what happens before declaring it an issue.

Don't hit it there then? Your reward for finding the right part of the green is that it can hold. Play angles to the right parts of the course that open those up.

Players want to get at pins and cry "unfair" when they can't play the shots they want to.

I'm not sure what you mean "land like that doesn't deserve that fate." Missing targets shouldn't result in birdie opportunities and certain pars.

One of the issues the players face is they are conditioned by week to week dartboard golf that they can and should go out and make a bunch of birdies and go at pins. If they don't go at flags and play for pars they'll have no problem. If they go at a pin and don't hit a perfect shot they'll go over and make doubles because that's death at PH2

Agreed. You could definitely make a similar video in certain parts of a lot of championship courses. And they often do these type videos with the rough too. They just don't tell you that the rough they dropped a ball in isn't really in play.

The USGA has let the course get away from them in the past. But let's wait and see what it actually looks like in competition rather than judging from Twitter videos made to draw a reaction.

I don't know if my opinion is right or not but getting to hear and watch Wyndham Clark more and more after his win last year, he comes off as a whiny entitled *****.

Wasn't surprised he was the first player to begin chirping about the greens this week.

Wild Card- Denny McCarthy since he is by far the best putter on tour.

This course is gonna kick folks in the nuts and putting will be a premium

Let's see at the end of the championship how many players hit great shots onto the right area and they roll off.

Remember Shinnecock Hills in 2018? There were several greens that were almost unplayable.

Having to water greens in between groups because your set up is ridiculous is illogical.

JMO. I want to see a tough test, but the USGA dances on the edge of ridiculous sometimes.

Its the US Open, its supposed to be hard. There arent any hazards on the course, the greens are the hazard, and they are going to penalize you for hitting it at them in the wrong places. Scottie said yesterday there are spots you need to bail out on approach and try to two putt for par. There is a lot more nuance to the strategic approach to this course that you won't get at other tournaments.

If you enjoy soft courses with pin seekers all day, Im sure you can find Valhalla on replay this week.

IIRC there have been years when over par wins and it has been as high as 7 or 8 over in the past.

I love seeing the pro's frustrated. The US Open is supposed to be the greatest test in golf, let it be just that.

This comes up every year and this is where I disagree completely.

It most certainly IS risky to hit a ball to that spot. It's not a great shot just because it's on the green or pin high. He's 15-20ft from the pin. We see pins that are 15-20ft from the rough or a bunker all the time. Aim your dispersion pattern away from that spot or you ARE hitting a risky shot.

These guys have incredibly accurate heat maps on every green. They have mountains of data on distance/spin/descent angle etc for every club in their bag. Game plan accordingly or you're not going to win a U.S. Open. Nothing in the video looks unfair to me, or suggests that the greens are unfairly fast.

If they do let the greens get out of control then that's a different thing.
