Looks like a great forecast that will create some crispy conditions out there and give these guys a proper test.

In 2014, Pinehurst held up VERY well. Kaymer played out of his mind but only three folks were under par for the tournament.

Here are the odds I just pulled from Draft Kings.

  • Player Name | Win | Top 5 | Top 10

  • Scottie Scheffler | +320 | -120 | -250
  • Rory McIlroy | +1000 | +240 | +120
  • Xander Schauffele | +1200 | +260 | +130

Aside from Scottie, seems like Matsuyama and Morikawa may be good picks? Both highly ranked in approach and around the greens. Putters are worrisome though.

Bryson will probably be in the mix too I'd imagine.

Morikawa definitely looks strong and is having a great year. Maybe Cam Smith for a LIV guy. This looks like a course he would do well on.

DeChambeau 6th at the Masters and 2nd at the PGA. We'll see if he can continue his quality in the majors.

Rahm had a cut in between his toes that forced him to WD this past weekend and he hasn't been in amazing form.

Morikawa looks real good right now.

Not much to add but normally I'm not a big fan of us opens because of the courses the last few years. Basically eliminated anyone who doesn't bomb it before it begins. I think #2 will do a good job of allowing different types of players contend. Short game is gunna be huge this week

Scheffler to win until proven otherwise.

I like these guys chances if not Scottie:

Morikawa - lights out recently, just hasn't had a hot putter. Style of game is perfect for Pinehurst and US Open setup.

Dechambeau - love him or hate him but the guy has been stellar in the two majors this season and is captivating to watch. Pinehurst is all about the second shot so for him it will be about distance control and spin. If he can dial that in watch out but I think his great major play this year ends on Friday.

Straka - has been sneaky good this year without winning on the PGA yet. Not sure his odds but I think a T10 is looking good.

Fleetwood - guy can't score on Saturdays and has habit or backdooring major top 10s. Hasn't been playing great lately but I have a hunch he could be in one of the final groups Sunday at Pinehurst.

I think his issue is more like what has happened with other LIV members like DJ. They are set financially and have other priorities keeping them from putting in the time and effort needed to stay at the top of the game. There are exceptions like Brooks and Bryson but LIV doesn't seem to bring out the best of a lot of members.
Bunk Moreland
How long do you want to ignore this user?
LIV participants in majors have finished pretty darn well overall the last 2 seasons given how few of them there are vs the rest of the field. Not sure I'm buying that.

For guys like Poulter and McDowell sure. Don't know that's the case with DJ yet and there's no way I'm buying it with Rahm. He's the ultimate competitor.

Spent a couple hours last night watching YouTube videos on the setup and holes. Played #2 this past October and absolutely loved the track. It is so difficult. Felt like I played ok that day and still shot 98 with what seemed like 50 putts. Only made one par on #6, which was interesting because it played as the toughest hole in the 2014 open. Hit a great 5 hybrid into that green and almost made the birdie putt.

Other spots I distinctly remember were the 5th green, where I actually putted out of the right greenside bunker. Hit it right where I wanted and it still rolled off the opposite side down into the collection area.

The 4th hold is absolutely diabolical with the way the fairway slopes left to right and then you have to hit a shot against that slope into a green back to the left.

The 8th green was the most intimidating to me. Seem to recall it being the most "turtle" like. And we played that as a par 5, but its a 4 for the Open.

If you get your ball right on 11 its really bad.

People rave about 11-14 but I found it to be a little redundant. It will definitely factor in the championship though because that's a tough stretch of par 4's.

16 is another that played as a par 5 for us but will be a big par 4 for the pros.

17 was a great par 3 IMO.

18 was an awesome finishing hole and will be really cool with the buildouts I've seen. I hit that fairway and then hit a great hybrid up the hill only to have it catch the last bit of the wire grass in front and hang up. Proceeded to duff it in front of everyone on the patio.

As an old white dude obsessed with his yard, I loved this video:

It has been underwhelming the results by the LIV guys overall in majors this season as several top players haven't performed well. No Top 5 finish at this year's Masters and only 1 top ten finisher at Vahalla in Bryson. Bryson has played well this year in the majors but guys like Brooks, DJ, Rahm, Neimann, etc haven't played well.

Everyone is different.

Going to LIV hasn't seemed to impact Brooks or Bryson's play in the majors.

DJ seems to have taken the money and went into coast mode.

Old guys were past their prime and probably coasting a little bit already.

I think Rahm is hyper-competitive and I'm not sure LIV is getting his juices flowing. It's not that he's coasting but LIV doesn't seem to bring out the best in him.

But to get back to the US Open, really hard to go against Scottie at this point. It'll be a mild upset if he's not in the mix on the back 9 Sunday. Brooks usually plays well on tough tracks, so I could see him up there. Also be interesting to see if Xander can keep it going now that he broke the seal.

I think making that statement is false. It's golf. If JT pr Spieth went to LIV would we be saying the same thing based on how they are playing now? Some guys go into a funk and blaming LIV is dumb.

You're free to disagree. But it's not just his play, it's his age, lifestyle and the way he's carried himself the last couple years. Add it all up and it seems like a guy who's checked out. That's why I haven't said the same about others.

He also made comments coming into the first LIV event of the year in early Feb that he didn't really practice or touch his clubs over the offseason, which was as of October. And supposedly people from Medalist have corroborated that as not an exaggeration and that they truly almost never saw him. Versus his time when he was on the TOUR.

Going 3-4 months with barely practicing sound like someone who is really mentally committed to it?

Yeah. It seems odd to come out defending DJ so strenuously, yet not seem to know really anything about what he's been up to the last couple years. He admitted he joined LIV for more money and less golf. About the only thing they showed him doing on Full Swing was talking about playing less golf and riding around in his fishing boat. Like you said, he admitted he didn't touch a club for months. His on-course demeanor looks like a guy who's just going through the motions.

It seems pretty clear that he's not burning the midnight oil to stay at the top of the profession. He appears to enjoy fishing in the morning and tequila shots out of Paulina's belly button in the afternoon. Can't say I blame him. But he's clearly coasting.

Yeah, DJ saw the end coming, jumped on a great opportunity for a huge bag of money, and seems to be embracing life away from the game.

Brooks and Bryson have held up well. Rahm is a firey guy that maybe needs a little more juice, or maybe he is just in a slump. Interesting timing for one though. Fat Pat is holding up well at the Masters; the rest not so much.

you also have to remember the number of LIv players in majors is smaller than pga guys. Look at last years major leaderboards. LIV guys were in top 10 all over the place. Also Neumann got special invitation to the masters this year specifically because he was playing so well. There are a handful that still all playing great golf.

I very much expect Cam smith to be in to be in the thick of it this week
