Back story- had clubs and played a lot in college (c/o '06) and then probably 4 to 5 times per year until my son was born 12 yrs ago. Have not played since and sold my clubs at least 10 yrs ago. My son picked up a set of US kids golf clubs and has been playing with friends. We are looking into getting him lessons sooner than later if he keeps it up. That all said, I need a set of clubs to maybe join in on occasion and to drag to the range for some bonding time. I am not going to be putting in any significant hours to get better so I need a beginner friendly, forgiving set up. I'll probably shop play it again sports and FB marketplace. Tell me a few good sets I should look out for and what to steer clear of. Any advice appreciated.

Ping G series irons, driver and fairway woods would be a good place to start. Wedges are preference, but you could find some good ones around 30-50 dollars each, used.

Where are you located? I may have some used stuff you might be interested in.

Thanks. Found some i20s from a neighbor I'm considering but reading gs may be better for what I'm looking for. I'll be on the watch. I live in the smithson valley/west New Braunfels area.

I'm also curious. Looking to get back into playing a bit, but my old set was a used one my grandpa put together for me. He passed several years back and I had left my set in his garage. His wife has since gotten rid of everything, so I no longer have my clubs.

Looking for some ideas on a good starter set for someone not looking to spend a lot of money, but don't want a cheap set. Trying to find what that middle ground is.

Go to 2nd Swing in the Colony and try out used sets. They have plenty of bays you can test them out as well.

Its been a few years but I had pretty good luck on eBay. Picked up a gently used set of AP1's for around $400.

2nd swing and callaway pre-owned have always been good experiences too.

Knowing what I know today after 43 years of playing golf, if I'm starting now, I'd do the following.

  • Acknowledge you will never swing like Rory or any PGA tour player today.
  • You don't have to have a perfect/near perfect swing to play scratch golf.
  • Buy the most forgiving set of irons/clubs and stick with it forever. For irons, stay away from cheap flimsy graphite shafts and stick with quality steel shaft but pay attention to the weight of the shaft. If you're old and brittle like me...perhaps 90 gram shaft to 120gram plus if you think you're strong.
  • Club fitting/lessons are mostly scams but do this: Dont underestimate the importance of Grip size and lie fitting.
  • Today's drivers are easier to hit than ever before. Find a head that looks good to you and stick with it. But don't spend $300 on a shaft.

Fantastic guy for lessons & fellow Aggie is Scott Hause. He's out at Wildcat now. I cannot say enough good things. If you search his name on Instagram you can message him and set up lessons.
