Xander just got maybe the most ridiculous relief I've ever seen on the Tour.

Shanks the drive way right into the penalty area in the woods. It's so far in it's up near a chain link fence. He can barely see anything from way back in there, has literally no shot out anywhere near/toward the hole should he attempt to play it...

And then they notice the shotlink tower is technically between him and the hole, so he gets free relief, gets to drop it right on the edge of the woods, pitch up and 2-putt for par.

From double bogey to tap in par and gets relief for a shot he had zero chance of making and zero intention of attempting. That is just pathetic.

Yea I think I'm going to start placing (imaginary) tv towers, grandstands, etc during my rounds, as that would save me a lot of strokes, too!

Maybe replace pathetic with 'extremely lucky'. Rules of the game were followed.

Spirit of the rules. If you get bailed out by a "rule" after a ****ty shot, it's not a very good rule.

Name me any golfer that wouldn't take that relief, if available to them. How would you rewrite the rule to make it fairer?

This actually happened to me few weeks ago. Gcoh setting up for liv tourney. #4 I fly the green directly at tv tower. Not sure if I hit it. Water behind it. They weren't filming but I still I took a penalty.

Wagner came in to discuss this with the rules official today to prove Xander did nothing wrong. Only difference was xanders caddy moved 2 big rocks and claimed what he claimed.

Yet they reconstruct the shot. If we are to believe the ball was actually where xanders was placed (which I'll believe for the sake of it)... Wagner with zero practice and not on tour is able to easily punch out. So why was it an obstruction for Xander?

And I don't blame Xander for asking for the ruling. It just seems ridiculous to grant it in that spot. If a media has been could make the shot then why couldn't he?

The rocks would have been loose impediments so no issue moving them. Remember the old rule was you could get as many people as you wanted from the gallery to help move a boulder and you are Tiger Woods with the largest gallery in golf.

As for Xander, he could have made the shot but with the relief available, he could put it on the green and potentially make a birdie. Why make the tough shot when the rules allow an easy shot.

Nobody is arguing his claim. The result of the ruling is what is ridiculous. And imo proved even more so when Wagner hit it out of there no problem (if we believe the ball was truly in the same spot)

There are a lot of times where a tour pro could hit from where there is a TIO but they always take relief. For instance they could almost always bend it around or over the shot link towers and get it close to the target but why add the extra difficulty or risk? If they have a sprinkler head in their stance, they could still take a swing but they will take relief if it is to their advantage even if it is with a putter near the green.

A key part of golf is the rules can work against you and they can work for you.

This

If hitting the tower or a wire is possible then he would be dumb not to take free relief

I admit I hate it if I am playing match play and my opponent gets a big break from the rules but then I just remember that I don't feel guilty when I use the rules to my favor. It all evens out over time (although I seem to get more help due to my inability to keep it in the short stuff).

It was the cabling for the shotlink that could have been hit. Small chance, but still possible. Wagner was proving that he could even get to that spot.

Wagner nearly hit the obstruction with his punch-out because it was positioned right where the opening was. That's the point of the ruling. Could have easily hit it because it was indeed in the line of play

Ball came out top right and was moving lower left. Just a little lower trajectory on the same line and it probably does hit the triangle base

Punch out went between the wire and the base

Rory just walked a shot off from 103 with a ball above the foot lie. He proceeded to hit it 25 yards left and short from the green
