Brother and I are taking my dad to Scottsdale to play golf for his 70th Birthday. I could use some recommendations for golf courses to play. Looking to stay for 3 nights. Plan to play 3 rounds. What are some must experience courses? TPC Scottsdale is on the list. Any others we should go to?

Interested what people would consider good value. Willing to pay $0-$300/person per round.

I played TPC Scottsdale last April and it was good, but went back to Scottsdale in October and played Troon North (Monument Course) and We Ko Pa (Cholla Course). TPC is fun because you can relate to the WM Open, but I really like Troon and We Ko Pa and would play those again before I play the TPC again.

When are you going and where are you staying? What level players in the group? Does dad still hit it out there? I'm not far behind him on birthdays and live in the area but courses I would have played 5 years ago I wouldn't play now.

We are all just okay players. I typically shoot 87-96, dad is same, brother a bit better than both of us, but we enjoy playing golf regardless of difficulty of it all.

Dad plays from senior tees and doesnt hit it real far. 180 - 200 yd drive(?)

I hit drives about 250.

We Ko Pa...desert golf, zero houses. A must in my opinion.

May 9th-12th.

Not sure yet on where we are staying. Probably going to rent a VRBO. You live in scottsdale? Any recommendations?

Yeah that Saguaro course keeps popping up on every thing I'm researching about Scottsdale golf. Will probably play it.

We-Ko-Pa isn't in Scottsdale but it's got 2 courses, a casino and hotel. I wouldn't stay there unless i was staying there for the entire visit because it's out in Fort McDowell.

If you're staying in town to be nearer restaurants, etc Wildfire at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge has 2 courses.

TPC Champions over the stadium course for me but they're both right by Scottsdale Airport if you don't like getting buzzed by planes.

Camelback golf club has 2 courses, Ambiente is the better one in my opinion.

Troon and Grayhawk are terrific and in town.

Mountain Shadows is a really fun short par 3 course.,

I really like Sunridge Canyon in Fountain Hills until I get to the last 6 holes. Too hard for me at my age which is very near your dad's.

Quintero out in Peoria is a bucket list for a lot of people. The views are terrific. It's not a bad drive from Scottsdale proper but it's a haul from We Ko PA for example.

Not sure where you're coming from but it should be fine weatherwise. May usually is good but it might get hot. As a fellow old guy with your dad hitting it in the desert and having to find it takes some of the fun out of it. He's probably better than me so that might not apply.

If I were visiting I would stay somewhere in the Quarter. Lots of restaurants, etc. Westin Kierland hotel is there and has 2 courses but I know nothing about them. I ran into Rocco Mediate at Sol Mexican Kitchen in the Quarter. That's not an endorsement but it's good.

I'm sure your dad will love this and you boys will long remember it. Whatever you decide you really can't go wrong.

If you ever want to live in a place that every day feels like vacation this is it. Sorry for rambling.

Lots of good stuff here. Appreciate the rambling my friend. I will take all of these recommendations into consideration.

A place I never see mentioned in these threads is The Pointe Hilton at Tapatio Cliffs. Nice hotel and a fun golf course to play kind of in the middle of things.
I never see the Talking stick courses mentioned either. Admittedly, there have been a lot of courses built since my last golf trip out there, but Grayhawk was always high on the list. I have never played We-Ko-Pa.
Kierland, Wildfire, TPC are all fine - but not in my top choices.
It's hard to go wrong with Troon, Boulders or Grayhawk.

I mentioned Wildfire, Kierland, Champions, etc because they have a 70 year old. Those are pretty flat. I'm almost there with his dad and getting beat up to say you played a course the people back home recognize is overrated.

If I could only play 3 courses and that was my budget I'd immediately take TPC off the list. It would be

1. We Ko Pa (either, or both)
2. Greyhawk
3. Troon
4. Quintero

Cant go wrong though. We played in May couple years ago and we were in jackets for our morning round at We Ko Pa. Weather was perfect.

I understand what you are saying and those places are by no means "bad". However, I think he asked for some "must play" courses. I just wouldn't consider those "must play".
I did add Talking Stick because it is nice, mostly desert golf and I don't remember it beating me up. I also mentioned Tapatio Cliffs which wouldn't beat anybody up and is a little different from typical desert golf.
I have played both Grayhawks enough to say they wouldn't beat you up played from the proper tees. Troon and Boulders - maybe a little more difficult.

Yeah, it used to be a destination for us because of all of the VRBO's in the neighborhood. Great for the first day and last day of the trip. We could fly in the first day, check into our house, and be 10 minutes from the course for our first round. Last day we could play early, clean up and get to the airport for afternoon flights. But it's about as far away from Scottsdale as you can get.

I guess it might depend on what they really want. If it's the best golf that's one thing. If they want outstanding golf and the best experience for the honoree that might be different. I don't know how close to 70 you are but I'm looking at it around the corner and I wouldn't play the "must" play places 3 days in a row or I'd be toast.

Quintero is the best course IMO. Every bit worth the drive.

I'm not as close as you and still recently decided getting "beat up" is not my cup of tea anymore.
Most really good designs are just as fun an experience from whatever tees you play.
I decided to pick a yardage and not play any further than that anymore.
He did ask for "Can't miss experiences".

Realistically, he has a ton of options out there and I am sure - after he decides where they will stay - you can point them in the proper direction. I would pick where I was going to stay first and worry about the golf after that.

Hence my question about timing and location in my first reply. I agree with you his location will be paramount. Scottsdale golf is a catch all term for golf all over the Valley but a lot of the best is elsewhere.

Looking forward to hitting this one in a month. Feel like Ive played every course there but this one. I am imagining a bit similar to Wickenburg Ranch given the location but could be way off
Im looking for Ray Finkle.... and a clean pair of shorts. Im just a very big Finkle fan. This is my Graceland, sir.

You're going to love or hate it when you're done. You'll love the experience and the views either way. It has beat up a few people though. You can't say you played the best golf Peoria, Arizona has to offer without hitting up this one.

We Ko Pa was awesome, play both courses. Really not that far from scottsdale.
Troon was also a fun play, in north scottsdale so a drive.

Ive never played Wickenburg but that is my next one to hit when back in AZ.

You will love Quintero. It's a treat.

Played it two weeks ago. Not all that fun IMO, but it was also during a bachelor party and after 18 holes of golf in the morning. Took 3.5 hours and was totally wiped by the end of the night.

We found it to get a little stale after a bit. It is also pretty long on many holes. Definitely not a short course where you just need PW-LW. I think I hit everything from 5 hybrid to AW off the boxes.

Id say it's worth it to play once for sure just for the vibe and the experience. Better players will definitely get more out of it. It's definitely not scenic other than the views of downtown. May be greener and a little more friendly to the eye when the Bermuda wakes up.

I haven't played everything in the Phoenix area, but of the 20 - 25 I've played, Quintero was definitely a Top 3 for me.
